DIY: Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

How could a week go by without us talking about some sort of Star Trek reference or gadget? Now if you really want to ~~be singled out as a dork~~ show your love for Star Trek why not build yourself this bluetooth Star Trek communicator? I’m not talking about those wussy TNG communicators, I’m talking about the old school plastic molded with mesh screen original series communicators. (Check out the video after the break).

Makezine has a great detailed write up on build your very own super geeky handset.

I thought it would be fun to have a Star Trek: The Original Series Bluetooth communicator for a cellphone. I worked with Dave Clausen to hack one together from a toy Star Trek communicator, a Bluetooth module, and a microcontroller.

If you pair this us with a phone that does voice dialing then you could easily walk around town with you phone nowhere to be seen. Imagine all of the ~~beatings~~ looks you will get as you walk down the street talking into this iconic device.

Build A Real Working Tricorder, Sort Of

No self respecting trekkie would ever be caught dead without his or her tricorder. So if your that much a trekkie or have no friends and find that people of the opposite sex are repulsed by your presence, why not kill sometime and build yourself a real working tricorder?

The words “Real” and “Working” are someone deceiving. See, if you really want this thing to “Sort of work” then you’ll need to sacrifice an iPhone. Also, the term “Working” only refers to what the iPhone can do, like send email or surf the web. If you cool with giving up your iPhone to make it look like you have a working tricorder then go nuts, but might I suggest getting some fresh air or professional help from a doctor as well!

Now this is only for the Trekkie hardcore. The IMM Vulcan 2GB USB Flash Drive comes in the shape of a hand throwing down the traditional Vulcan gang sign (i’m trying really hard here to make this sound cool). If your not a trekkie you might not want to be caught dead with one of these in your computer bag. On the other hand this could be used as a female pleasure device (it would have to be bigger) so it might actually help you score instead of sending women running the other way.

If you want the geek cred then dropping $35.99 for this isn’t going to be a problem.

I’m a hardcore Trekie. I’d almost go as far as saying i’m one serious ass trek head, but i’m not sure if walking out in public with this $49.99 Tricorder replica, especially if i don’t want to be laughed at or beaten in public.

On the other hand if you plan on attending Comic-Con or a Star Trek convention then bringing this along to show all of the massive nerds it’s working sound effects and lights you should be alright.

If your cool with the later scenario, then you can pick this baby up from Amazon on June 4th 09 for a mere $49.99.

California Scientists Design Working Tricorder

Scientists at the University of California have created what just might be a working tricorder like the ones used in the Star Trek TV series. They aren’t actually calling it a tricorder, but the Universal Detector is a catchy name never-the-less (and one that will avoid a lawsuit).

The device would use nano-technology to figure out what kind of contaminants are present on any surface that you point the device at. Essentially you should be able to point this thing at anything and figure out what it’s made of. The idea uses a back plate that is filled with nanoscale holes. When placed on a surface the back plate is zapped with laser light and the surface plasmons that form emit light with a frequency related to the materials touching the plate. The only problem is that, the device, while sound in theory, will need a system that can decode the light signatures it produces.

If your not willing to wait for this to hit the market than you could always get this tricorder that will run on your iPhone.

Captian Kirk’s Chair

Need to assert some authority over your bridge, or if you don’t happen to own a Constitution Class starship you could also assert some authority over your living room with this Captain’s chair straight out of the original Star Trek series.

It looks remarkably similar to the original prop from the ’60s TV series. The makers have outfitted the chair with some authentic sound effects and blinking lights, it even comes with some sampled dialog you can play back. Now if it only had a button to order phasers set to kill so that you can wipe out those annoying friends who come over and stay to long.

No details on pricing but we do know it should be available sometime in 09.

DIY: Blu-Ray Laser Phaser

If your a geek then you must have loved the old classic Trek episodes, the one’s with the red shirts that never made it, and what about those over sized phasers (compared to the later Trek series). Well, now thanks to Kip Kay you too can have a cool looking Star Trek phaser that emits a blue laser. By using a classic Trek toy phaser, a blu-ray dvd player diode, a resistor and switch he was able to slap together a phaser that actually fires off a blu(e)-ray.

As always kids, if you want to do this then don’t point the laser into your friends eyes. You could blind him and then be left to read to him comic books for the rest of your life.

I am really surprised that a Star Trek communicator has yet to become the norm amongst the geek-elite.

Chip Chick has this â€œexclusiveâ€ communicator replica, unfortunately you can only have conversations with sound effects or pre-recoded phrases. If your really hardcore maybe you could cram a cell phone into it and show off your geek-cred.

If that fails, you can turn your razr into a star trek communicator as well.

Dude Spends $15,000 On Star Trek Theater

Star Trek fan Gary Reighn held no punches back when building this incredible Star Trek themed theater. It took him 2 years and his entire basement to pull it off (and not being married probably helps). Featuring a projector, HD DVD play back and a PS3, what more can you ask for.

Now if he could get a working transporter then I would be really impressed.

Star Trek Phaser to Control your HD DVD player

There’s a special offer going on right not where each purchase of a Toshiba HD DVD player will come with an original Star Trek phaser remote control. I can see all of the trekies right now debating on who will be the first alien character that they will phase.

There’s no official photo’s yet of the device, but I’m sure there will be endless discussions online as to it’s authenticity. Trekies world wide will begin the never ending battle as to which generations phaser is better and so on.

I just wish, no matter what it looks like, that I could set it to stun while I’m stuck in traffic. That would greatly improve my drive into the office.
