Billy Chasen thought that using keys to open his office was so 2000 so he decided to build a door lock/unlock system via text message. Using a servo motor, a tiny web server, and some piping claps from Home Depot he built a unit that can lock or unlock a door via a text message. [...]

Speaking at the Chaos Computer Club on Tuesday, a pair of researchers demonstrated a method of eavesdropping on encrypted GSM calls and text messages by using a few cheap pay-as-you-go cellphones and a variety of open source software. The ability to listen in on cellphone calls has been available to law enforcement agencies for a [...]

With the massive amount of multi-function “smart” phones out there people tend to loose the focus of what cell phones actually are; phones. My mother couldn’t care less if her phone plays mp3′s or if it’s got a twitter client. All she wants is a phone and a super easy one to boot. As she [...]

For the love of God kids, don’t, and I mean don’t try this at home. Everett Bradford has been working on a Pyro like system (just like the one from X-Men) for his final project for a mechanisms class (what ever happened to building volcanos and the such?). This thing looks quite dangerous, but it [...]

Writing out an SMS message can be painful at best, especially if your on a cellphone that doesn’t have a qwerty keyboard. Predictable text is great, but you still take forever trying to get your message across in 150 characters or less. This is why the D-Scribe is such a great invention. It’s a pen [...]

Come on, admit it. You at some point had a ZIP drive, we all did. I can still remember transferring files via sneaker-net with my beloved ZIP disks in hands. 100 Megs, unheard of you could copy all of your stuff and still have room for even more stuff. Then came the click of death, [...]

Looks like Steve Jobs is taking lessons from Sony when it comes to thwarting hackers. The 1.1.3 firmware has now been confirmed to be right around the corner and Unlockers and 3rd party Apps peeps aren’t going to be too happy since both of these will be broken once again as they did with 1.1.2. [...]

Last week we saw the urine powered batteries now from one of the worlds largest battery manufactures, Sony, we see a battery that generates electricity from sugar. The device works off the same principles found in living organisms. Test batteries show the ability to produce 50 milliwatts – currently the world’s highest level of power [...]

I’m always running around when I’m not typing about on tech.nocr.at. Between the Videocast, my family, and tech.nocr.at I have little time for anything else. I do try to let people know what I’m doing on my Jaiku and Pownce accounts. The problem with these two services is that they don’t offer SMS support here [...]
