Here’s one thing you don’t hear of too often, a serious bug in Apple’s iPhone version of Safari that could end up cost you, the user, some serious cash.

Although it’s not a very common bug but thanks to someone who probably spend countless hours trying to poke a hole in Apple’s mobile device, all iPhone users might avoid being hit with extra operator costs.

Estonian Apple site AppleSpot discovered the bug in question. If an iPhone user visits a site which uses Motion-JPEG (usually found on websites that show live feeds of web cams) in Safari, Safari will continue to use up bandwidth even after it’s closed. Safari is one of the few apps on the iPhone that is allowed to run in the background. So let’s say you have a web page up that uses Motion-JPEG streams and even if that site is in another tab or worse yet, Safari has been closed, the stream will continue and if your on a mobile carriers network then bandwidth will continue to rack up.

Now just imagine you were traveling outside your home country where you would be nailed with international data roaming charges and you decided to visit that sexy nurse pay live stream nature wildlife live cam, you could easily rack up some serious charges. The guys at AppleSpot have claimed to rack up over 740 MB in silently streamed bandwidth in one hour of testing. That would cost something like $3,000 in international roaming charges. Yikes!

So it seems that the iPhone and iPod touch is leaving a trail of what you’ve been up to, even if you don’t want it to. Do you know (and love) all of those cool swooshing transition effects that happen when you hit the home button or switch pages in Mobile Safari? Well that’s your problem right there. Seems that the iPhone takes a snap shot of your screen to produce those nice transition then it deletes them… the thing is, it don’t really delete them, more like a quick delete without an overwrite. Anyone with physical access to your iPhone and some hacking skills can build a trail of what you have been doing based on those screenshots that haven’t been deleted.

This can be a serious problem if people have access to your physical unit, but most people who find an iPhone or iPod touch would be more interested in selling it or using it for their own personal use. But since the hack has been demonstrated, it would be nice if Apple could pony up and fix the problem. This way if you even have your phone confiscated by law enforcement agencies you would be embarrassed by all those trips to dateanerd.com

xMod allows you to tweak all of those hidden settings in Leopard. xMod allows you to tweak everything from Finder to Safari, and if offer various other tools that allow you to tweak such things as the default screenshot behaviour and even check the status of you drive. The interface is a bit clunky but easy to use. Still beats doing all of these tweaks via command line

Mozilla has just revealed a first look into its new Mobile Firefox interface. The new mobile browser will come in two flavours: one for touch screen devices like the iPhone and most PDA’s, and one for non touch devices, like most cell phones.

Firefox mobile offers a familiar layout to all you iPhone and iPod touch users out there. Taking there cues from mobile Safari the main screen offers a similar layout. Back and forward navigation buttons, a bookmark button, and a retractable address bar.

There are some additions over Apple’s mobile browser: a zoom button and a tab button that offers a different experience of the Safari one. When you press the tab button it will display up to four tab previews on the same screen for easy switching.

Just a few days ago we talked about hacking up your iPhone so that you could run an NES emulator on it. Now super cool developer Deron Dantzler has created a full featured version of the great NES classic Duck Hunt that runs on the Safari browser on your iPhone. Instead of a light gun, the game uses your fingertip to shoot down those pesky winged critters. It takes a little trial and error to get used to the finger presses, but eventually you’ll get the hang of it.

Deron did a fabulous job on getting all the pieces to look just like the original NES game. It even runs quickly on an EDGE connection. Unfortunately, there’s no sound, but maybe someday Apple will just give us the Flash support we all want and we’ll be done with all this workarounds.

Those wily mobileers at Engadget Mobile send a pointer to Dailymotion‘s new iPhone-specific site. No matter how you feel about iPhone-specific websites, watching videos on the iPhone is always fun, and since Dailymotion has taken the time to encode the content in Quicktime, it’s actually possible here without a special player (unlike most other vid sites, which use Flash). Of course, if your iPhone is activated normally, you could just be watching YouTube, but for those of you running around without SIMs in your iPhones (ahem, Erica), this is an option for your video watching needs. {mosadsense4joomla ad_layout=”D”}

Unfortunately, even though I wasn’t able to browse around the site on an iPhone, I did browse it in my usual Safari browser, and while the content played fine, it looked as though it was sized incorrectly– only part of the Quicktime video showed up. Some video is better than no video, I guess.
