I bet if you reached into your computer bag right now you could easily pull out multiple USB cables. You know what I mean, that birds nest of cabling consisting of multiple iPod/iPhone cables and USB mini variants.

Scosche aims to change that for you with their flipSYNC II fob. Much like the key fob of a car, the flipSYNC is a USB cable that folds up nicely into a keychain fob.

The currently offer two models; one with an iPod/iPhone 30-pin connector and one with dual miniUSB/microUSB. They are sleek, small, and durable and will run you $20 a piece. I already have a nice Lacie USB key on my key chain and will soon add one of these cool units.

In our next installment of Distros That Don’t Suck we will be looking at open source HTPC software. Sure you can load up VLC or even use Windows Media player, but having a dedicated solution with a UI that is made for a TV is a lot easier and pleasing. I’ve left the PVR-centric software like MythTV and Freevo off the list since their main purpose is to act as a PVR. I’ll be reviewing open source PVR software by itself at a later date.

XBMC – The Xbox Media Center Project started as homebrew software for the original Xbox gaming system and has since been ported to Linux, Windows, OSX, AppleTV and even as a standalone Linux based LiveCD/LiveUSB image. It offers a clean UI, intuitive interface and can play just about anything you throw at it. It offers a plugin system with a huge repository of community plugins to enhance the experience. It’s real easy to setup and it’s configuration is portable across operating systems. If you have an old Xbox laying around this makes a great HTPC that is powerful and best of all cheap.

MediaPortal – This is a Windows based HTPC software so technically it’s not 100% open source since it requires Windows and doesn’t offer a Linux port. If offers everything you would expect in HTPC software; Video streaming, DVD playback, Internet Radio, Picture Gallery and it’s own plugin system. You will need a compatible TV Tuner card to enjoy PVR features and to watch TV but it’s not needed to run the software. If you are a Windows fan and are looking for an alternate to Windows Media Center this is as close as you can get without the cost.

Element – Element is an open source HTPC system that comes pre-loaded with XBMC and the ability to play back just about any media locally or over the Internet. Element also has it’s own framework for offering add-on modules that allow you to play content from services like Hulu, Cooliris, Boxee, Clicker, Amazon on Demand and Youtube. They have adapted the UI’s of popular open source software like Firefox and Pidgin so that it fits the TV experience better than their native desktop versions. They also offer an Android app that allows you to use your Android phone as a remote control; definitely a neat idea for the times you can’t find the remote anywhere.

GeeXboX – A Gentoo based fully functional media center that can be run from LiveCD, LiveUSB, or be installed on a hard drive. GeeXbox is a very lean distro that doesn’t require a lot of processing power so it’s perfect for older hardware. It uses Enna as it’s primary media center application to play your music, videos or look at your pictures. This is the perfect distro for the no-frills experience when you just want to play your media and aren’t looking for any additional functionality.

The one app I use the most on my iPhone and iPad is VLC. It makes watching video on my portable devices a lot easier to do since I don’t have to spend a bunch of time converting video and soon all you Android fans will enjoy it as well.

Sure there are other video playing options for all you Android users but has there ever been a better video player than VLC? It will play anything you throw at it, at least on the PC side.

If you are a true satellite TV junkie and absolutely must have it everywhere you go then the VuQube is for you. I must warn you, it isn’t cheap.

This isn’t like you average folding dish that move RV and truckers use, this unit provides you with a signal even while your moving. The unit is also small and compact and can pretty much guarantee you a decent signal. The unit is compatible with pretty much any circular LNB provider like Dish Network, Express VU, and DirectTV.

So if you just can’t live without you DirectTV be prepared to spend $1699 getting it.

Although the SEGA Dreacast wasn’t the most popular console on the market hardcore geeks everywhere hold it near and dear to their hearts. It took a nose dive shortly after being launched, but due to the fact that some of the games that were released for it are just short of awesome and the fact that pirating said games is super easy it lives on.

Modder Techknott took his Dreamcast and decided to cram it into a portable unit he could carry around. The unit holds the discs in the back, features a colour screen that was ripped out of a PSone and uses all of the original Dreamcast controls. It even has A/V output so you can still enjoy the game play on your TV.

It’s one-of-a-kind so you won’t be able to run out and buy your own, too bad.

Sure, we have seen our fair share of game console mods here at tech.nocr.at, but never one so shinny (just look at all those finger prints!).

The sweetest part of this whole mod is how Techknott hid the optical drive behind the flip-up LCD screen. The whole mod looks comfortable to use, just wish the finish was something other than chrome so you don’t have to be constantly cleaning it. Check the video out of it in action after the break.

Since the release of the iTunes app store the iPhone and iPod touch have really been pushed as the next great portable gaming platform. Game developers have really started to push the limits of the device but the one major stumbling block has only been the “touch only” interface.

The iControlPad looks to change all of that. It’s a case for your iPhone that offers dual analog nubs, a gamepad controller and of course a few buttons. There is also an internal battery that charges your iPhone while you play.

Bad news is that you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to use this since it’s not an official Apple licensed product, but the iControlPad is supported by some of the biggest devs like the boys that make all the cool emulators. If you’re interested in the device, you can can place a pre-order by signing up at their site.

I’ve seen my fair share of portable Gamecube systems, but this has got to be one of the slickest I have ever see.

Designed and hacked together by a Ben Heck apprentice, the NCube is a beautiful creation. The case is a seriously modded Datamax Kid’s Delight and the screen is an unmodded Zenith PSone display. The unit also has a 2-way switch so you can choose to run off batteries or AC, a memory card slot and a rear-mounted disc drive.

What the hell is the Snegenes-P you ask? Snes + Genesis + NES – Portable. If you’re the hardcore 8 or 16 bit gamer and refuse to use one of those fancy handheld emulators like the Gemei X760+, then why not build yourself one of these?

Modder Trstn18 smashed together components from all his favorite consoles into this custom see-through case so that you can see all of the messy goodness. Coming in at 8.6-inches wide, 5.4-inches tall and 1-inch thick, it’s not really portable in my opinion. Powered by 6 2600mAh batteries, this beast should get you somewhere between 5 to 7 hours of game play on a single charge. It also has composite video and stereo outputs so you can enjoy all of your 8-bit goodness on your TV.

As you can clearly see, the back of the unit is a bit of a mess. I’m not too sure how comfortable this thing will be when you hold it with a massive cartridge sticking out the back.

You might want to sit down before you read this. Nokia has announced that they will be stopping all support for it’s plagued portable gaming platform, the N-Gage. Yes, I know, you might be saying “Dude, didn’t Nokia stop supporting this thing like years ago?”.

The move really isn’t a huge shock, the platform has been begging to be put out of it’s misery for a few years now. Although Nokia has officially announced that no further games will be published for the unit, it also said that it will continue to sell currently available games in the Ovi Store until September 2010.

Although purchased games will alway continue to work on the unit, any of the connected community features will also cease in 2010.

On a side note, anyone wanna buy a slightly used N-Gage? Cheap.

The guys over at PortableApps.com have been turning out great portable apps for years now. Apps that you can easily put on a USB flash drive and run from any machine. All of the software that they offer is open source, until now that is.

PortableApps has decided to add a handful of closed source apps like Skype and Chrome to their list of offerings. Project lead John T. Haller offered a number of reasons for the move, ending with “it’s the right thing to do. Keeping an open platform and allowing all software to compete on a level playing field just makes sense.”

Besides fan favorites Chrome and Skype, Free Commander, SpyDLLRemover and 2x Terminal were added. IcoFX, XMPlay and a few others are expected soon.

Why lug around a generator when you could go green and build yourself a portable solar power station? Okay okay okay, so you’re not gonna the the juice out of this thing that you would out of say a 1500 watt gas generator, but if what you require is less than 400 watts of power then this is perfect for you.

The portable power unit has a solar panel that charges a 12 volt deep cycle battery which then in turn feeds a 400 watt inverter. This will also save you money in the long run. Besides the initial investment in the hardware there is no operating cost to use it. The only thing you require is sunlight, which last time I check is still a-plenty. Especially during the day.

Our favorite gaming console modder, Ben Heck, is back at it again. We have already seen his Xbox 360 Elite Laptop mod and more recently his NES Cartridge mod and now his brings us this super sexy PS3 Laptop mod.

As light or as small as a netbook it is not but it’s still impressive how he managed to integrate a 17-inch HD display into the whole thing. Ben says that he could have made it smaller but wanted to use as large a screen as possible while still making it portable. Check out the video of the PS3 Laptop below.

Do you remember the Nomad? Sega’s first attempt at a portable gaming device that allowed you to play Sega Genesis games? No? Let me refresh your memory. It was big, bulky, had terrible battery life and cost almost $200 and that was 10 years ago.

In today’s world you can pick up the Genmobile for under $60. It isn’t made by Sega but the AtGames Gen Mobile is fully licensed. As well as playing classic Genesis and Mega Drive cartridges, the Gen Mobile comes with 20 built in games including Sonic Spinball, Golden Axe and Altered Beast. It also has TV out so you can play all of these classics on your TV.

If your not into the tiny 2.5-inch screen you can also grab the Gen Core. It’s by far the smallest complete Genesis system ever.

A pioneering Dell employee has create a prototype portable data center. This won’t be replacing any of the big shipping container data centers that the likes of Google or Sun are building, but this is a great start to of things to come. This would be great in a disaster recovery plan to bring systems back up on a temporary basis after a catastrophic event.

Pike has crammed two servers running dual-core, 2.5 GHz Intel processors (Harpertown), 32 GB of memory, 4 TB of disk space for storage, a power supply, a 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch and even some solid-state drives into a metal box. The box consumes about 325 watts, is relatively portable and provides enough performance to act as a DNS server or a data center for a small business

With those specs this thing would make one awesome war driving machine, lol.

What better to jam inside of an old NES game cartridge than, well, an NES. Okay so it’s not really an NES in there it’s an emulator but this mod does use the original buttons, plays NES and gameboy games, has an mp3 player, movie player, an FM radio reciever and best of all, the video out still works so you can hook it up and play on the big screen.

How many times you been cruising down the road when the craving for a nice tasty cold Margarita? I know I never have, but if I ever did the Margarator MSB-585 would come to save the day.

The blender was clearly created for on-the-go drinkers. IMHO, drinking and driving is a really bad idea. Looks like Ben Heck has been raising some crafty apprentices. Only a few months after Ben Heck Forum member hellraizer churned out an impressive portable Nintendo 64, he has struck again by crafting an handheld Dreamcast using a Lazer Doodle shell like he did with the N64.

Inside the chassis he jammed a Dreamcast, Quantam controller, PSOne LCD screen, power supply and what must be some serious battery power. All-in-all you get about 3 hours of game play, which is better than what I get on my PSP. Check out the video after the break.

For the longest time we have seen portable apps for Windows. You know; the kind of applications you can drag onto a USB stick and have them run directly from the stick and never, and I mean ever, have to install anything on any machine that you may run them on. Now with U3 technology (sorry kids, it’s only available for Windows) installing and creating portable apps has even become easier.

I did a segment on the Lab With Leo show earlier this year on just that, portable apps for your Mac.

Freesmug have an awesome list of great OS X apps like Word Processor, FTP clients, IRC clients, and more. They also have a few paid versions of portable Mac exclusive apps like Mail.app, Ical, and Addressbook so that you can keep all of your setting in synch.

theplaceforitall.com – This has two of the greatest portable apps that I use all of the time, versions of the popular web browser Firefox and the email client Thunderbird. Both of these are compiled for both the Mac and Windows, so it doesn’t matter what OS your on, you can run them both and you will maintain all your settings across both platforms.

Because of the complex way that some settings are stored in the Mac operating system it’s hard to come by or even create portable apps, but I’m sure it won’t be too long before that wall comes tumbling down.

A crafty hacker on the benheck forums decided that building a portable Xbox had been done so instead he decided to build a wireless video interface for his Xbox 360. The device acts more like a “thin client” and streams whatever his Xbox is playing. The unit has a 1.2GHz A/V receiver and the guts of a wireless controller. It’s powered by two 2600mAh batteries running at 7.5V and even has it’s own built in charging circuit.

It’s a crafty build and great for playing Xbox games while wondering around the house. Plus, it will keep your girl friend/wife off your back for hogging up the TV.

3M is reportedly close to rolling out a super tiny, portable digital projector. This tiny unit could be used to project pictures, powerpoint slide shows, pr0n, movies, or whatever else you might want to slap on a wall or screen.

The lucky guys at Popular Science got their hands on the MPro 110 and reported that after plugging a DVD player into the device they were able to project a movie up to 11 inches wide on various pieces of furnature and walls.

When the projector hits the shelves it will cost $359 and will have the ability to connect up a laptop, digital camera, iPod, and any other mobile device that outputs and image. At that price this would be a perfect item to keep in your bag so that when on the road you could easily show a presentation or lay back in your hotel room and watch a movie on the wall. Although, at 11 inches you would need to have everyone huddled around the screen in order to actually watch anything. Let’s hope that this is just a start in the right direction.

Pacman, the video game of my youth. I spent many an hours (and money) at the local coffee shop when I was a kid trying to master this game (I don’t think I ever did). sam_thornley over on the benheck forums came up with this great little project. It uses the guts of a JAKKS Namco TV arcade stick and the composite video signal is hooked up to a 2.5-inch screen with a CCFL backlight.

Four AA batteries are in a regular project box gives this portable gaming adventure 2.5 hours of play. There currently is no sound, but he says that the TV games’ sound pales to the original anyway.

The Portable PC Theater is a beautiful design by South Korean industrial designer Jin Woo Han. It consists of a computer and an LCD projector, all in one. This is perfect for people like me who spend a long time on the road and in hotels, who would want to watch a video on a laptop when you can point this masterpiece at a white wall in your room and have your very own theater.

No word yet on this idea hitting the market, but if it does I would pick one up.

I’m a huge old school gamer. NES, MAME, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, you name it (I’m really showing my age here), so much so that I must have gig’s of roms (all legal of course) and emulators on every machine that I own. Well, this portable media player is right up my alley.

The EM-SOL2GIG is a solar powered media player with a twist. It can play MP3s and MP4s as well as emulate the NES/Famicon, GameBoy Color, and SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis. It’s also got a built in text-to-speech system so you can have all of those e-book read to you, instant audiobook.

The portable unit offers a 320×240 display and is about 1″ thick. The large solar panel can also be used to charge other gadgets as well as the unit’s internal battery.

Nothing drives me more insane that people who wonder around in public places yapping on the cell phones at sound levels that could make you deaf. This little device will easily quite your immediate area from those idiots who think their phone conversations should be broadcasted to the whole world. I would like to mention that this is illegal pretty much anywhere in the world, but it’s almost worth the risk.

As you can see from the picture this device is about the size of an iPhone, but don’t let the small size fool you, this portable cell phone jammer will create a field of cellular silence that’s 32 feet in diameter. The Jammer blocks most frequencies including GSM850, EGSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900, CDMA800, WCDMA/CDMA2000, PHS, DECT and even 3G. You’re only going to get about 1.5 of jamming from the battery, but that should be good enough for your bus ride to and from work everyday.

At a price of $246 you’ll be spending more money to block an iPhone than to actually purchase one.

This will go hand in hand with a portable microwave for your car. According to Twice, Chrysler will begin selling “a Mopar car cellular/Wi-Fi hot spot, expected to be the first of many Internet offerings from the car companies” on August 25th.

The unit will work with all 2009 Chrysler models and select earlier ones. Customers will be able to order their vehicles with the device already installed or they can bring in compatible models into a dealership to have one fitted.

The unit will run you $499 and will be able to grab both EVDO and WiMAX signals. The company that will be supplying the device, Autonet Mobile, says that the router can be converted for use on all cell networks.

“Unconnect Web” as it will be known will run you $29 a month and cost you anywhere from $35 to $50 to have it installed. Don’t forget your $35 activation fee too.

Because putting on make-up and texting on your cell phone isn’t enough while you drive, you can now heat up your burritos too!. Maplin, which is something like a British Radio Shack, has rolled out a portable microwave oven that can be run from your car’s lighter socket. This might just be perfect for tailgaters and truckers, not to be strapped into your front seat so that you can heat up yesterdays leftovers while you are driving.

The instruction manual reads … “It is advised that you start the vehicle prior to using the microwave to improve cooking times and prevent the car battery from becoming discharged.” Translation: This sucker uses a lot of juice.

Here’s another Playstation 3 laptop, and surprisingly enough, it wasn’t slapped together by our beloved modder, Ben Heck. This mod features a 17″ 720p HDTV, 320GB Hard Drive, built in speakers, and a keyboard.

Now if a modder could only shrink my 360 down to the size of an actual laptop, then I’d be so impressed that I would actually buy one. Would make portable gaming so much fun.

One of the most difficult things about getting really clean chromakeys is making sure that your green/blue screen is nice and smooth and free of wrinkles.

I really don’t understand the fascination with karaoke, but if your a fan of picking up a mic and laying out your own rendition to Micheal Jacksons Thriller then the Tomy Hi-Kara Portable Karaoke Box is for you.

I love my iPod but most people have the same complaint – you love having portable video but can’t stand watching said video on a tiny screen. There just must be a light at the end of the tunnel real soon. Optoma’s Pico Projector, which is now in the prototype stage, is a mini projector for your cellphone, iPod, or other portable video device.

The Optoma is the first pico projector with DLP technology which should offer us a decent picture. Only time will tell is this product will be a success, but it should would be cool to display some video on a hotel wall or on the back of a food tray on an airline.

I’m a huge fan of my EeePC. So much so that I am actually writing this post on my 4G right now. The one thing that drives me bananas with the unit is the lack of a keyboard light, and when you are in a dark room trying to type, well you can just imagine.

In a clear action of trying to play catch up to Google, Apple also announced a suite of software that will be revolutionary. (If they decided to roll it out in 2002). MobileMe is a much needed update to the .Mac system. MobileMe will let users log into a website using a billion dollar url; me.com, to access their email, address book, and calendar for a mere $99 a year, you know, much better than Google’s $0 a year charge.

On the plus side it will now be compatible with Windows, errr, oh yeah, Google’s bee there and done that too. Sounds like it should me meh.com and not me.com

The PSP might just have some life in it. Although this is nothing more than a mock-up of what a PSP Phone might look like, the designer behind it just might have something. We have seen failed portable gaming unit with cell phone capabilities in the past, and most of them have failed. What if you have an established gaming system, like the PSP, and add a cell phone to it? Multiplayer gaming no matter where you are? I’d hate to see the bill for a long gaming session, but you can imagine the possibilities when you started to think about it.

It was only days ago that Sony announced the 3.90 firmware for it’s portable gaming system, and only days later crafty hackers have created a custom version of the firmware that support all the 3.90 goodies including Skype. To boot, you can also update your PSP to the custom firmware via the new network update available in the firmware. Yes, you no longer have to tether your PSP to your computer to get all any future custom firmware goodness.

I love me my portable gaming (yes the English was bad on purpose). I always have my DS and PSP stuffed into my backpack (along with every other portable gadget I own) just incase I am stuck somewhere and I have to kill some time.

I can already play NES and Gameboy games on my PSP if I choose by way of some crafty home-brewed software, but what I can’t do is play them in the park on a nice sunny day without killing my battery.

This portable gaming device not only plays games from the three classic Nintendo systems, it runs on the power of the sun (hence my whole park and sun analogy above). Right out of the box this unit can handle NES/Famicom, Gameboy and Gameboy colour titles, as long as you can get the ROMs onto an SD card which the unit uses to store the games. This might only matter to all of the Canadian readers, but I have it on tight lip secret from a Rogers Mobile employee that Steve Jobs it going to announce a Canadian deal for the iPhone tomorrow. Take it as you wish but I have great faith in the source, couple that with all of the trading market activity day with Rogers stocks and analysts predicting it I’m willing to ride with it.

Rogers being the only Canadian carrier that supports gms technology in Canada it would be a given that when the iPhone makes it’s way north of the border it would be with Rogers, unless Steve decides to create Apple Mobile. Nahh, there I go starting rumours again.

With all of the rumours flying around about ultra portables and the keynote supposedly being leaked on wikipedia today this might not make it as a headline. Only tomorrow will tell.

Looks like Sony is at it yet again, adding more functionality to it’s PSP line of portable gaming units. The GPS reciever for the PSP is about to leave it’s Japanese stomping ground and make it’s way over to North America. Sony has posted on it’s CES 2008 page that “Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI’s, and even downloadable city guides.”

With the hacking community being a buzz of homebrew activity to add more functionality to the already fledging portable system, maybe Sony has woken up and smelt the coffee with regards to the units potential.

Pricing and shipping dates haven’t been released yet, but in Japan you can pick this bad boy up for about $50.

Leaked pictures of what possibly could be Lenovo’s new MID, or Mobile Internet Device, which looks quite like the old Atari Lynx portable gaming device. It looks like it has a horizontal PSP Xross Media Bar-like navigation, a wide body, and a touch screen. It can also play back video and audio and also has some fancy image drawing capabilities with internet browsing built in. Not sure what else it does but I’m sure we’ll be able to tell real soon.

Looks like the guys over at Gizmodo have dug up a brand new patent from Apple that shows off yet another truly innovative design from the company. The patent application describes a modified Cinema Display with a slot that would house a portable computer (maybe the new slimmed down MacBook everyone’s been talking about?). The key to the patent is the idea that the laptop would be concealed by the Cinema display once docked.

It’s yet another brilliant design concept form the minds at Apple. If we don’t get a new ultra slim laptop at this years MacWorld the thickness of this design is going to be huge, but on the flip side it removes the need for a docking station and extra wiring. I want one.

The range will consist of a mouse, headset, travel adapter, and a choice of 2 battery extension packs. There are multiple colour choices for the mouse and headset, but it seems that the travel adapter and battery pack will only be available in white which really sucks since my EEE PC is black. I know you can get mice and earphones from any old place, but will they match your super cool EEE PC?

Under the design proposal, the ports maintain their original form whether the connection system is in an open or closed position. When the connection system swings to the closed position, the ports also swing with it such that they are flush with the mobile device.

At some point later this year or in the early New Year, Apple is expected to introduce its first ultra-portable notebook in quite some time. Rumor is that it will lack an optical drive, include on-board NAND flash, and have a 13-inch widescreen LED backlit display.

A new addition to the Secunia Software Inspector series, the free Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI), is now available for BETA testing. Capable of detecting and categorising more than 4,200 applications.

So far, I have run it on a Vista Ultimate and XP SP2 box and it has come back with some impressive results. It found some software that I hate to admit, had totally forgotten about, on my system that was out of date. As for cons, I have only found two thus. One, it detected my Firefox install as 2.0.0.4 instead of 2.0.0.6. The second being, not so much a technical fault, but a person preference. It is not portable, you install it and it works on that box.

What they don’t tell you on the site is that when it detects out of date applications, it provides you a direct download link. This is good and bad, you are not seeing where this download is coming from, so you are trusting Secunia. It’s good for us lazy computer geeks though, because it is only one click.

Finally, they provide you a detailed write up on the out of date software you have and links to find out what vulnerabilities affect that software package.

In closing, this is a great piece of software that I will definitely keep tabs on and take around with me, along with my File Hippo Updater

If you’re like me you probably own a metric ton load of microphones from all of those podcasts you might do (okay I realize some of you might not do podcasts). I’ve been known to drop a pretty penny on microphones and other gear, hell I even own a mic that I paid over $500 for (I know I’m crazy).

One of the problems with having a studio pro microphone is the inability to make it very portable. Pro mics usually use an XLR type connector and I have yet to run across a laptop that has an XLR input. Because of the lack of XLR inputs you usually have to carry a pre-amp and some sort of firewire or USB breakout box to make it all work, way to much when you are trying to travel light.

With all of these projects being banned here in Canada from China due to Lead contamination this portable Lead scanner might just be right up my alley. It’s gotten so bad that Toy r Us here is Canada recalled all baby bibs that were lined with plastic purchased in the past two years no matter what make or manufacture. That immediately prompted us here at home to toss all of our son’s bibs out and purchase new ones. Have you ever wanted to shut those people up who ride on the bus or subway with you? You know, the people who decide that everyone around them should be annoyed by their conversations. Here’s an awesome project that let’s you build your very own personal cell phone jammer. This project is recommended for advance hobbyist only. There is quite a bit of tiny soldering involved.

An internal lithium-ion battery provides up to 2 hours of jamming (two bands, such as cell) or 4 hours (single band, such as cordless phone, GPS, WiFi, bluetooth, etc). The battery is rechargeable via a mini-USB connector or 4mm DC jack (a common size). Alternately, 3 AAA batteries may also be used.

I’m on the road quite a bit. I love my iPod Video for that exact reason; I can bring movies, TV shows, and music with me in my back pocket, literally. This little puppy replaces a bag full of adaptors and cables and makes life easier. The main selling point for me is, aside from the fact it’s cheaper and more portable than Apple’s AV Connection kit, is how the audio is line-out, rather than from the degraded headphone jack connection. The sound quality, therefore, is much better. For $35 USD you really can’t go wrong.

You might remember they were caught with there pants around their ankles a few years back when they were installing rootkit like software on peoples computers who inserted CD’s into their computers there were from the Sony-BMG label. Now a line of flash drives that Sony sells has been discovered to install rootkit-like functionality that hides folders on people’s computers.

You’d think that after the mess they hand on their hands with the CD rootkit debacle someone at Sony would write a memo to the rest of the organization explicitly stopping this type of development, but no, instead they do it again.

This can lead to a serious security issue for computer users, these hidden folders are perfect for malware writers to use as hiding places for their malware. I’m left speechless.

There are tons of NES modders out there, most of them create portable units out of the NES internals or jam them into the weirdest places. This is the firm mod I’ve seen that uses the actually NES unit. Kotomi crammed a full-sized DVD player — plus the LCD — into an old NES he had laying around, including functional remote control (Video after the jump).

This isn’t the first time that the legendary computer manufactures name has been used to revive a product but seriously, what market do they think they are going to shatter with these type of specs. My cell phone has better features. On a side note, if they have native C64 support I want one.

To make one of your own, you’ll of course need a spare battery, as well as a working homebrew-enabled PSP to get it up and running. Once you have that, and after running some software on the PSP and on a PC, you should have a battery and memory card combo ready to bring any bricked PSP back up and running with the v1.5 firmware.

Benjamin Heckendorn (aka “Ben Heck”) is the master of console mode. Ben has created a portable unit that combines an NES system and an Atari 2600 console and he crammed them together into one compact and slick package.

This little bad boy dubbed the NESTari can play cartridge games from either system. In order to keep the footprint small, Ben’s latest mod uses the guts of an Atari Flashback 2 console and a NOAC (NES on a chip). This keeps the system nice and small and very power-efficient.

It’s got a 3.5-inch LCD, runs on rechargeable batteries, and has all the controls that you need to rock the good old Pitfall game.

PongMechanic (video at the end) was built by a German guy and is a real life version of the old school pong game, except this bad boy has no TV and actually uses paddles and a whole bunch of moving mechanical components. This is the type of thing that would be awesome at parties. I don’t speak or read German, but you really don’t need to once you see this puppy in action, plus, there are subtitles!

The latest filing for Apple to become public is the “Wide touchpad on a portable computer” (It’s a continuation of an earlier patent filed in early 2004). Much like the iPhone, touchpad computing might just be around the corner for your next MacBook.

Special sensors will determine the positioning of the hands and fingers relative to the touchpad and software will figure out your intentions:

• Whether you are just typing and the touchpad should be disabled,
• Are you using a finger to move the cursor and other fingers are just accidentally resting on a touchpad
• Are you trying to manipulate objects on the screen with several fingers and Multi-Touch should be enabled
• Etc;

With the success of the iPhone touch screen keyboard this might be a great advancement in the way we use our computers. Imagine being able to switch keyboard layouts on the fly, or the ability to switch to software keyboard shortcuts right on the display. Only time will tell.
