This is one small computer, actually it looks more like a memory card reader than a computer. Don’t be fooled by it’s incredibly small size, this thing is more powerful that my netbook. CompuLab’s TrimSlice packs one hell-of-a punch for such a small unit.

The unit comes in a solid metal case that can take some abuse, doesn’t need a fan to keep it cool and uses only 3 watts of power. CompuLab will be gearing this unit to the HTPC market and hasn’t announced an OS for it yet, but I’m sure the modding community will jump all over this once it’s released. This would be great for a small server connected to your TV running something like XBMC or a MythTV frontend.

No official pricing has been announced yet, but CompuLab is aiming for a sub-tablet price and it should be shipping sometime in April.

I’ve tried really hard to stay away from all the CES stuff that has been flying around the inter-webs but this story about Mattel cramming a camera into one of their 1:64 scale Hot Wheels car was too good to pass up.

The idea is for people to get a first person view of what it would be like if you could ride inside a Hot Wheels car. Each car comes with enough memory to capture 12 minutes of VGA video that can be downloaded to your computer via USB or viewed on the tiny screen located on the underside of each car. With such limited memory using this as a spy camera is out of the question, unless something happens really quickly.

They should be available this fall for about $60. I’m sure the novelty of using it to record video will wear off quickly, leaving you with a very expensive small metal car.

So I went to the Metallica concert the other night here in Toronto (it’s my 15th time seeing them live. Yes, if you are asking, I am a fan!) and decided that maybe I was having an early mid-life crisis and wanted to walk down the path of my early life as a dedicated hardcore Metallica fan. As a dedicated fan I scoured the band’s website to catch up on the happenings with the metal legends and stumbled upon their iPhone app, TapTap Revenge: Metallica.

Tapulous, the company famous for it’s addictive line of TapTap games has worked with the band to release a Metallica themed version of it’s TapTap Revenge games aptly called: TapTap Revenge: Metallica. The dedicated version of the game allows users to poke through 10 tracks of some of the bands most famous songs like “Enter Sandman” and “One”.

The game gives you the option to play in a fast-paced arcade mode where you are challenged with bombs and other objects. Career Mode allows you to work your way through the track list and there is even a Bluetooth battle mode that allows you to challenge other players via Bluetooth.

I’ll be honest, if your not a hardcore Metallica fan you might not enjoy this, but if you consider yourself a member of the Metal Militia then what are you waiting for? It’s only $4.99, it’s worth it if not for the music alone.

Flip is set to release an upgraded version of it’s MinoHD pocket camcorder just in time for the holiday season. The second gen MinoHD features a brushed metal body, double the internal memory (8GB vs 4GB), a 2-inch LCD and an HDMI connection (sorry, no cable included).

The corners are now rounded giving it a sleeker appearance and the FlipShare software package has been tweaked to include direct uploads to Facebook in addition to the already available uploads to YouTube and MySpace.

You can get the new MinoHD in silver or you can opt for a custom finish for no extra charge directly from the Flip website.

A pioneering Dell employee has create a prototype portable data center. This won’t be replacing any of the big shipping container data centers that the likes of Google or Sun are building, but this is a great start to of things to come. This would be great in a disaster recovery plan to bring systems back up on a temporary basis after a catastrophic event.

Pike has crammed two servers running dual-core, 2.5 GHz Intel processors (Harpertown), 32 GB of memory, 4 TB of disk space for storage, a power supply, a 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch and even some solid-state drives into a metal box. The box consumes about 325 watts, is relatively portable and provides enough performance to act as a DNS server or a data center for a small business

With those specs this thing would make one awesome war driving machine, lol.

I’m not a big gun fan but watching a bullet is some metal at 1,000,000 frames per second slowed down to 30 frames per second is quite amazing.

To put in perspective how fast the camera was that created this video lets do some math. Video is typically shot at 30 frames per second. This video was shot at 1,000,000 frames per second that’s over 41,000 times the speed of regular video. When slowed down to the regular 30 fps you get this super slow video that shows every little detail of the bullet. Quite amazing.

At first glance you might think that this is a small set of steel drums or maybe just two tin cans stuck together but in reality these metal cylinders will impress you with with the sound they put out.

Each cylinder has midrange drivers mounted at each end with a ribbon tweeter mounted between the cylinders that reflects off of the aluminum surface for omnidirectional output. The two units are mounted on an arm that resembles a desk lamp with a third cylinder on the floor which acts as a subwoofer.

Production for the unit starts in a few months and all the speakers including the arm will be sold as a kit. With a massive $4000 price tag this unit better impress.

Most kids are absolutely fascinated with electronic projects of some sort, take me for example, when I was a kids all I wanted to do was build radio receivers and play with my metal detector. That being said, I really wished that I knew about building this many years ago. This just seem to be more fun when you use your own two hands to put something together.

This simple and crude metal detector will work, not well, but it will get the job done, plus if the radio you use has an ear phone jack you can avoid annoying everyone around you. Then again, if someone on the beach looked at you walking up and down with a radio and calculator taped to a CD case and all of that taped to a broom handle, well, annoying them should be the least of your worries.

Bill Beaty, the science hobbiest, has come up with a cool way to levitate magnets. I do want to mention one word of caution here, you have to be very careful when building this as neodymium magnets are incredibly powerful and you could easily injure yourself or lose you hand playing with them.

While working on science museum exhibits in 1990 I came up with the above idea: it is known that a spinning metal disk will lift and fling a strong magnet. Therefore, metal rods with opposite spin will lift a magnet but WON’T fling it sideways. It works! I used “sched-80″ heavy wall copper tubes about 1-3/8″ diameter, 12″ long, with 1/4″ wall thickness. I hammered aluminum plugs into the tubes, carved shaft-tips with a lathe, built endblocks and bearings, spun them with an AC/DC motor, and managed to levitate a stack of two 3/4″ diameter neodymium magnets. The spinning tubes must move at about 5000 RPM before the magnet starts floating.

With Apple selling upwards of 3 million iPhones already I bet you are looking for that extra little way to stand out in a crowd. Why not light up the Apple logo on the back of your iPhone. iPhones.ru has a teaser of an iPhone hack that causes the Apple logo on the back to light up whenever the screen is turned on. Details are still sketchy, but it looks to me like the hack involves replacing the metal backplate with an LED equipped one; custom software also allows you to select the brightness of the glow independently of the screen brightness.

I’m not sure if the are going to be selling kits to let you do this at home, but if they do we will let you know.

Here’s a hack that’s not only simple and effective, it’s also illegal. This hack will let you get in or out of some parking garages when there isn’t an attendant around. By using something metal to trip the parking lot’s proximity sensor that is meant to let cars exit the garage you can park your car for free. Hack-a-day goes on to explain how using a hard drive magnet would get you better results:

A magnet from a hard drive might work a bit better because it is able to trip multiple types of sensors, but for this hack any kind of metal will work. This proximity sensor is a high-frequency oscillation type, so anything that attenuates, varies the frequency or stops the oscillation trips the sensor.

Remember, this could easily get your car towed or you could even be charged with trespassing, so like always, don’t try this at home kids. if you do, let us know your success.

I’ve been to many concerts that featured some incredible light shows. I was even at a Metallica concert here in Toronto that has some wicked flames going on stage, so much so that you were smacked in the face with an intense heat wave, but having shooting arcs of electricity onstage by using a tesla coil as a guitar amp just rocks.

It’s a match in Metal Heaven. Now, if he could only make it bigger and louder I’d go see him in concert.

With absolutely now added benefit outside of the aesthetic one, the ceramic white PS3 is on it’s way to North America. According to an FCC filing that has surfaced, the white PS3 with matching controllers and a 40 GB hard drive should hit the market anytime soon.

This will put a dent into the PS3 case modding industry. I guess big box hardware stores will take a hit on the sales of metallic white paint.

Unknown yet as to the date of arrival or price, but if I had to guess I’d say mid March with a price tag of $399

I remember a few years ago tinkering my my dishnetwork dvr in order to fix a corrupted eeprom I ripped out a trace on the board. Let’s just say it took my steady hands almost a week to recreate the trace using some trace wire and solder. Not something I suggest anyone have to do. I wish I had CircuitWriter back then. CircuitWriter allows you to draw your own circuits. It applies instantly on most surfaces (epoxy, glass, plastic, metal). Hell, you could even repair the rear-window heater traces on your car.

This will save many pieces of electronic for a hack like me.

Looks like someone wasn’t all that careful when trying to preform a hardware unlock on an iPhone. All they did was remove 3 screws and PUFF, the dreaded blue smoke..

Story: We were so happy, all the software part was done, so we started opening the iphone. The antenna cover was a bit tricky but eventually it came off. Then we started to open the metal cover (after taking out the 3 screws) and PUFF, up it went in smoke, I think my colleague must have touched something. It literally went up in black smoke. I was so hot that when I tried to pick it up I burnt my fingers. So, this is for sure the most difficult part of the whole process. I don’t know what he did, as I had just stepped out of the room to fetch something when I heard a scream, they got such a fright.

The Ironkey is not only a strong USB key because of it’s metal casing but is also has military-grade encryption built right in. With all of these projects being banned here in Canada from China due to Lead contamination this portable Lead scanner might just be right up my alley. It’s gotten so bad that Toy r Us here is Canada recalled all baby bibs that were lined with plastic purchased in the past two years no matter what make or manufacture. That immediately prompted us here at home to toss all of our son’s bibs out and purchase new ones.
