S3 Krypton Laser – Will Fry Satellites

The Spyder 3 Krypton laser is the world’s brightest handheld laser, Currently under review by Guinness World records, the S3 is over 8000 times brighter than the sun. I’m not sure why you would want a laser than can travel 85 miles besides the fact that you might want to fry UFOs that might be sniffing around our atmosphere.

As you can see from the video, this isn’t your average meeting pointer laser (unless your plan was to burn a whole in the wall) so be careful with this kids. If your wondering how dangerous this laser is, Wicked Lasers advises:

Warning: This laser’s brightness is potentially hazardous to pilots’ vision and satellite sensors. NEVER point it at an aircraft or a satellite. The S3 Krypton is too powerful to be used as a laser pointer or a gunsight. Never point it at another person, an animal or a vehicle.

They might want to add: tress, buildings, concrete, helicopters, appliances, furniture, well, you get my drift. If you still feel like living dangerously be prepared to fork out about $300 for this and probably a red flag with the Department of Homeland Security just for purchasing one.

DIY: Cool Arduino Clock

People build all sorts of cool things with Arduino. Take the Twittering Doorbell or the Bedazzler but how about something as simple and useful as a clock? And an eye catching one at that!

The clock build requires a few simple materials; a laser printer, some LED’s and a few connectors. The instructions are super easy to understand and the only artistic skill you will need is knowing how to use a stencil (as you can see from the picture above).

Being an Arduino project, you will also get the source code from the project website to get you clock going. Along with the code you’ll also get a detailed PDF schematic and a template for the stencil. With the holiday season right around the corner, making a few of these and giving them to your geeky friends might just be the perfect gift idea.

Phaser Boasts 300mW Laser

Since you can’t walk into to your favorite weapons store and pick up a phaser just yet, hacker Luke decided to build his own. He picked up a toy phaser from Amazon for about $20 ripped out the internals only choosing to reuse the trigger, top switch and battery pack.

The phaser contains two laser diodes which were pulled from a 6x BD-R burner. I sure hope that the burner was broken since purchasing a unit just for the sake of pulling the diodes out to put in a toy gun is very expensive. The two diodes are mounted on a swiveling carriage which can be turned 180 degrees to switch between the diodes. A boost driver is used to bump up the 3v that the batteries provide to 7v to drive the diodes.

Although you won’t be killing Kingons with this unit it does make one cool looking toy. Remember, don’t go firing it in peoples eyes, that will hurt. Check out the video after the break.

Seriously, you’d have to be a cast member of the TV Show Madmen to be able to pull off something like these mini lighter cufflinks. Seriously, who smokes any more (besides me. I know I know). Not even the modern day super spy would want to be caught with these things, they’d opt for the mini laser cufflinks.

Laser Music Sequencer

If you have ever been to a club you can usually be assured to see some kind of light show (unless the clubs you frequent are in some back alley). Most of those light shows incorporate lasers to add to the experience. Now you can create your own laser show that will act to the music, albeit a small show, but great for your room.

Funky Alex has come up with a cool dual speaker laser X/Y mirror display that will bounce a laser around to the beat of the music. I’m sure if you had some bigger speakers and a longer throw you could probably have this display on an entire wall.

The vibrations from the 2 base speakers (with 1 mirror an each speaker) makes the laserbeam move with the music and the frequencies (audio).

BSG PC

This has to be one of the most detailed PC case mods I have seen in a very long time, and the fact that I am a huge BSG fan also helps. The Battlestar Galactica PC mod features everything you expect from the BSG show including a dock for the vipers and a front loading CD drive that is located behind a laser-cut transparent BSG logo, so you can actually see the dic spinning.

The Medallion was laser cut in separate layers and pieces, then glued together. Red LEDs were added behind the bird inset to illuminate the dvd drive and provide a nice backlit effect.

DIY: 30 Watt Laster

Commercial laser cutters can cost anywhere from $10,000 right up to millions of dollars. Although there isn’t much info on how this crafty hacker went about building his very own 30 watt laser that can cut through steel, the Australian maker is answering questions in the comment section of the video. Maybe if we all ask really really really nicely he might put together a page detailing all the steps he took to put it together.

My 30 watt ULS powered Laser table with 54x30x9 dimensions. Still a few things to add like a rotary attachment and a martensitic stainless steel top.

California Scientists Design Working Tricorder

Scientists at the University of California have created what just might be a working tricorder like the ones used in the Star Trek TV series. They aren’t actually calling it a tricorder, but the Universal Detector is a catchy name never-the-less (and one that will avoid a lawsuit).

The device would use nano-technology to figure out what kind of contaminants are present on any surface that you point the device at. Essentially you should be able to point this thing at anything and figure out what it’s made of. The idea uses a back plate that is filled with nanoscale holes. When placed on a surface the back plate is zapped with laser light and the surface plasmons that form emit light with a frequency related to the materials touching the plate. The only problem is that, the device, while sound in theory, will need a system that can decode the light signatures it produces.

If your not willing to wait for this to hit the market than you could always get this tricorder that will run on your iPhone.

“Interference Laser Games” is a game that you play via a projector. Nothing fancy so far, but what if I told you that you control the game with your average everyday laser pointer. Check out the video to see how the pointer is used in Space Invaders and Pong. Essentially it’s the same as a mouse except it’s a freaking laser pointer.

No idea on how it works our how it’s built, but it looks like a fun project to work on.

Remember all the fun you had as a kid playing with that Laser Tag system your parents got you from Consumers Distributing? Well you can now relive all of that excitement including point the laser at someone’s eye with the DIY Laser Tag system.

The homebrew system uses a few cheap laser pointers stuffed into a toy gun and a PIC16F628A micro-controller that connects up to a peizo transducer which produces different beeps. It even has a 5 pin header on the device that can be connected to a programmer fo in-circuit programming.

DIY: Blu-Ray Laser Phaser

If your a geek then you must have loved the old classic Trek episodes, the one’s with the red shirts that never made it, and what about those over sized phasers (compared to the later Trek series). Well, now thanks to Kip Kay you too can have a cool looking Star Trek phaser that emits a blue laser. By using a classic Trek toy phaser, a blu-ray dvd player diode, a resistor and switch he was able to slap together a phaser that actually fires off a blu(e)-ray.

As always kids, if you want to do this then don’t point the laser into your friends eyes. You could blind him and then be left to read to him comic books for the rest of your life.

Laser Target Alarm Clock

Most mornings I have to keep myself from throwing my alarm clock half way across the room when the buzzer goes off. My luck is that i’m still half ass asleep and can’t actually grasp it to throw it, so what makes me think I will be able to pick up a handheld laser gun and aim it at a bullseye?

If your actually interested in this then you can pick it up here but I forewarn you guys now, if you think you’re going to impress any female you might one day bring into your bedroom with this thing, you’re dead wrong.

Cheap DYI Laser Cutter

I’m been trying to source decent desktop laser cutter for the Lab with Leo TV show that I’m on. The biggest problem is finding anything that would be a reasonable cost for most consumers. Decent desktop laser solutions can easily run you into the thousands and they are big and ugly.

Thanks to the wonderful website Instructables you can know build your own Laser cutter for about $50. Yes that right I said $50 (here comes my late night infomercial spiel).

“This project demonstrates a simple hack to create a large format laser cutter utilizing all the scrap electronics you may have lying around. If you have a broken scanner or two, the cost can be just about 30 dollars for the entire project.”

I’m going to work on building one of these for the show just to see how well it works. I’m either going to nail it on the head and be the new fav among my friends who want some sort of laser etching done or I’m gonna be the guy who slices his finger off and makes the front page of the paper. Either way i’ll keep you guys posted.

At first glance these gadgets might like look like sloppy knock-offs of the Sony PSP, a laser pointer, and an iPod. But once you pick them up you’ll be in for a shocking surprise. These bad knock-offs actually deliver a shock to the unsuspecting victim.

The devices cost about $4 a pop and deliver a tiny charge of current to whoever is holding them. The laser pointer actually functions as well, but don’t expect to play and games or music on the other devices.

Poor Mans 3d Scanner

Don’t have $4000 + to purchase a high end 3d scanner? Using a simple web cam, a free (as in beer) piece of windows software and a laser line level you too can achieve the same stunning results. The David Laserscanner does just that. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

- A camera (e.g. web cam)
- A hand-held line laser
- Two plain boards in the background
- A Windows PC
- DAVID-Laserscanner software (free)

Once you’ve got your equipment together, print off the calibration sheets that are included with the David Laserscanner software and apply them to you 2 plain boards.

Your two boards must form a perfect 90 deg right angle, this is key to the scanning process.

Next, point your webcam at your calibration boards and turn off any image enhancements that your camera might have (i.e., ambient light boot, auto exposure, etc).

Next we fire up the David Laserscanner software and auto calibrate our calibration boards. You must have as bright a room as you can get for this step, you almost want a complete washed out look for perfect calibration.

Once your done grab your line laser and turn all of the lights off, you want to make sure that the room is a pitch black as possible, all we want the camera to do is see the laser. Then, at a high angle, slowly pass your line laser over the object from top down, repeat the scan until you have a solid mesh form of your object.

Export your scan into an .obj format and load it up into your favorite 3d modeling program and enjoy.

Although it does take a while to get a decent scan out of the thing it sure is cheaper than some of the solutions out there. If you have the interest and some free time, it is a definite check out item.

â€œIn a microphone, sound waves (differences in the pressure of air) cause a diaphragm to vibrate back and forth, altering its resistance to an electric current. When an electric current passes through said diaphragm, the output forms a complex signal that can then be reinterpreted by speakers or a recording device as sound. The device shown here works in a very similar way. Sound bounces off of a window, causing minuscule vibrations (acting like the microphone’s diaphragm). When a laser is trained on the window, its reflection will vibrate with the sound. The laser’s reflection, if converted to an electrical signal can now be recorded as sound. I will outline how I made my own (cost me $3, hope yours is the same or less) – the technically savvy among you will spot the countless variations possible on this basic idea.â€

A flashlight that will make you puke

I’m sure at one point in your life you’ve been pulled over by Johnny Law and had him flash that super duper bright flashlight in your eyes asking you for your drivers license ownership and insurance. Imagine if that flashlight when pointed in your eyes actually made you vomit.

The incapacitating flashlight is being developed for the Department of Homeland Security in the US. The Uber bright light which is generated from an array of LED’s will be able to use a range finder to measure the distance to the target’s eyes so that it can adjust the energy of the light to a level that won’t cause permanent damage but, you guessed it, will make you toss your cookies

The DHS is funding the research on the new nonlethal weapon. Cops, border security personnel and the National Guard could be carrying these things around by 2010.

What’s next? Freaking sharks with laser beams on their heads. Once 2010 rolls around I’ll make sure to wear my sunglasses at all times. That should fool em.

Unmaker Laser Gun

This past weekend I spent some time fighting crabgrass around the house with a propane torch, if I had $53,700 laying around I could have purchased this cool backpack laser from Clean Laser which would have done a much better job.

This little puppy is used to restore old buildings. Clean Laser System’s backpack laser cleans without chemicals, pumping out a 20W programmable beam to vaporize contaminants like paint, grease and rust. Simultaneously, the laser is safer to use on many surfaces since it’s non-abrasive and will not leave a foreign residue.

Unfortunately you can’t go around zapping people like you do in Halo since the laser isn’t that powerful, but hey you can dream can’t you? Just imagine cutting someone’s car cleanly in half when they cut you off!
