SiriToggles: Enhance What Siri Can Do

Now that we have a untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5, we can actually make Siri somewhat useful.

SiriToggles is a Siri enhancer for jailbroken iPhones running iOS5. SiriToggles allows you to launch applications, toggle some system settings and check how much battery power you have remaining. A simple command like “Launch Plex” will launch the Plex app for example, but it can also handle non-linear commands like “Turn of my Bluetooth” or “Set brightness to 30%”. If only it could also handle driving directions for us Canadians, not that i’m bitter or anything.

If you want to run SiriToggles you need a jailbroken iPhone. You can pick it up from Cydia.

iPhone 4S Jailbreak

The jailbreak for the A5 processor based iPhone and iPad is just around the corner. Chronic dev team member @DHowett has posted a video that shows an iPhone 4S running jailbroken and unthethered. In the video you can see Cydia running and the phone being reset without the need to connect it to a computer.

Pod2g, @planetbeing, @MuscleNerd and @p0sixninja, who are all working on the hack have confirmed that the video is real. This those us iPhone 4S owners a bone that the jailbreak can’t be too far around the corner.

The PS3 Has Been Pwned, Again

Wasn’t it just yesterday that we reported on the new firmware for the PS3 that was suppose to stop all the jalbreaking? Well it seems that we we can now safely answer the question of whether or not it would stop people from unlocking their units for good.

A few mere hours was all it took to pick apart firmware 3.56. Hacker Youness Alaoui (aka KaKaRoToKs) announced on Twitter that he had successfully unpacked the new firmware and published it’s signing keys, paving the way for people to create custom firmware based on 3.56 and allowing hacked PS3s to regain access to the Playstation Network.

And the cat and mouse game is-a-foot. No doubt that Sony will release another security fix in a few days and that will be hacked as well. This reminds me of the old satellite hacking days where the big direct to home satellite providers would change their keys almost daily. Not with the intent of stopping hackers since their keys had been cracked, but with the intent to annoy the average person to the point that they stopped doing it. Now that they keys are in the wild I think that Sony’s only chance to stop this will be with the release of the PS4.

Sony 1 – Geohot 0

Remember the decision from a few weeks ago where a judge didn’t think they had jurisdiction to decide on the fate of jailbreaker George Hotz, aka Geohot? Well, Sony has finally seen their day in court and has managed to win a restraining order against Geohot.

We all know that once you put something on the internet it lives forever; the restraining order against Hotz only prevents him circulating the jailbreak. Sony would have to go after every single person who has the keys up to have any chance of stopping the spread of their keys. They can’t be that stupid, can they? Of course not.

Sony also released firmware version 3.56 today. Will the new firmware bring us new goodies? Not a chance. The purpose of the upgrade is to put a stop to all of the jailbreaking that has been running wild. We have confirmed that the update does indeed prevent jailbreaking, the question that remains is will it do so for good. After all, we do remember the cat and mouse game that went on for years with the PSP modding community.

XBMC Launches On Apple TV 2 & iOS

The second generation Apple TV suddenly looks a lot better as a home theater PC. XBMC, the open-source media center software that is the driving force behind projects like Boxee and Plex has just launched for jailbroken second generation Apple TVs.

The Apple TV iOS port uses Apple’s “VideoToolBox” private acceleration API. This gives XBMC access to the built-in hardware video acceleration included in Apple’s A4 chip, allowing for non-Apple approved HD video playback. You heard me correct, full 1080p video playback on the tiny $99 box. Video playback isn’t the only thing you get, most of the core apps that are in the Desktop or Xbox versions are there as well.

Since the second generation Apple TV runs iOS, developers didn’t stop there. They added an iPhone and iPod touch port which can be installed on jailbroken devices via Cydia. Not a remote application, a full blown XBMC system on your iPhone or iPad. The iPad version tends to be less frustrating to use than the iPhone version, but I’m sure they will work on that.

I hope Apple can see the benefit of XBMC on their devices, it would be an instant hit if it ever hits the App store.

Geohot 1 – Sony 0

You must be living under a rock if you didn’t hear about Sony filing suit against fail0verflow and Geohot for their distribution of the PS3 jailbreak firmware. The first step in Sony’s legal battle involved a temporary restraining order (TRO) against them to stop the distribution of the code. That TRO case was heard earlier today in California and it was tabled as the Judge wasn’t satisfied that she had juristiction to rule on the matter since Geohot actually hacked the PS3 in the state of New Jersey.

Sony based their decision to file suit in California on the fact that PayPal, Twitter, and YouTube are all based there. Twitter and YouTube were used to spread the code and they claim that Geohot received donations via PayPal. The Judge said that Sony’s basis was absurd and if that logic were true then anyone who uses any of the websites mentioned in the world would fall under his juristrisction.

For the time being Geohot has put the code back up on his site, but in reality the damage is done. We all know that once you put something on the Internet it lives forever. Sony might just be trying to save face and they very well might succeed with their TRO, but what will they do about the rest of the world? Get TRO’s against every Internet user?

iOS 4.3 Jailbreak Already Available

The iOS 4.3 SDK has only been available for one day and it’s already been jailbroken. A new version of the famous PwnageTool can now jailbreak iOS 4.3. This just solidifies the fact that Apple can’t patch the limera1n venerability that groups like the iPhone Dev Team and the Chrome Dev Team are using.

The masterminds behind the hack are speculating that Apple might fix the venerability in the upcoming CDMA iPhone that Verizon will be selling starting February 10th of this year. It’s a new phone with a new radio, it would be real easy for Apple to address the exploit in a hardware revision. The same could be said for the rumoured iPad 2, but new hardware that fixes old problems also brings with it new problems.

The cat and mouse game will continue and my money is on the dedicated community that has worked so hard to bring the jailbroken openness to a set of devices that should have been open from the very start. Way to go guy and keep up the good work.

Seas0nPass: 2nd Gen Apple TV Jailbreak

The guys over at fireCore have just released Seas0nPass, an application that will jailbreak your second generation AppleTV. Seas0nPass requires you to tether your AppleTV briefly during boot in order to preform the jailbreak by loading custom IPSW files onto your AppleTV.

fireCore is a name that is synonymous with AppleTV hackers. The group also released aTV Flash, unlocking software for the first generation AppleTV that added additional functionality like XBMC and a browser.

Seas0nPass is open source and free and only works on the second generation AppleTV, so don’t try using it on your iPad or iPhone. It currently only works with OS X 10.6 or later and a Windows version is currently under development.

Remember, jailbreaking an Apple device can lead to rendering your device useless if you don’t know what your doing. By the looks of it over at fireCore’s website most people seem to agree that jailbreaking the second generation AppleTV is riskery than other Apple devices. iPod Nano Recovery Mode

After discovering James Whelton’s SpringBoard.plist hack for the 6G iPod Nano, Steve Throughton-Smith decided to play around with his Nano to see what else he might find.

Steve may very well have stumbled on some kind of DFU-like recovery mode, much like the recovery mode that allows customized firmware (or jailbreaking) to be injected into the iPhone/iPod touch.

Discovered what may be DFU mode: hold down the restart buttons until you get a black screen (it reboots twice) and iTunes sees the device and alerts you.
Afterwards, modified iRecovery to work with the iPod nano (had to add its DFU/Recovery USB ID) and allow it send files, and tested with some files I had extracted from the iPod nano 6G firmware

It seems that people are getting closer and closer to a working jailbreak for the Nano. I might just get back video playback on my Nano sooner than I thought.

iPod Nano Hack

By booting up his iPod Nano with a modified SpringBoard.plist file hacker James Whelton was able to remove an app from his screen and replace it with a blank space (Video after the break).

Now this isn’t quite a jailbreak like hack, but it is a small start in the right direction. Today we can remove an app, tomorrow we might be able to add a new one and a week from now we might be able to write our own iPod Nano apps and cause Apple to open a whole new app store dedicated to the nano. Alright so maybe that’s pushing it a bit far, but just think if we could modify the sleep settings of the unit. Yes, we could finally have that iPod Nano watch we have all been waiting for.

Android On Your iPhone

I love my iPhone 4, don’t get me wrong, but the old additive of the grass is always greener on the other side alway creeps up. Both the iPhone and an Android based device have their pros and their cons. Unless you can justify dishing out some big bucks monthly for an iPhone and Android based phone, your stuck with one or the other.

But, if you own an iPhone, you might be able to dual boot both the iPhone iOS and Android. Lifehacker has put together some easy steps to dual boot iOS and Android on your jailbroken iPhone.

Much like any time you try to put a square peg in a round hole it comes with it’s drawbacks. A few critical things don’t work and it runs quite slow, but as time goes on I’m sure they will work out the kinks and when that happens you might be able to run Android as smoothly on your iPhone as you can run Windows on your Mac.

Gamepad For iPhone

The iPhone/iPod touch has quickly become a gaming favorite. There are tons of games for you to enjoy and best of all, it’s small and already in your pocket. The unit is great for games that require nothing more than touch like board games and trivia games, but when it comes to games that require a lot of movement or dexterity like a sports game it can be really hard to use.

Enter the iControlPad which is essentially nothing more that a massive case for your iPhone that adds some buttons and a few joysticks. This is for the hardcore gamer only, not really small and compact as you can see form the picture, but if you like gaming on your iPhone then this is for you.

There is one small downfall, it requires a jailbroken unit to work since it requires some software that is using private api’s that Apple won’t allow. No word on pricing or availability yet, but you can sign up for more info right on their site and be notified when it’s ready to ship.

iPhone For Pen Testing

The iPhone has quickly become more than your average smart phone, it really is a computer in your pocket. So why not use it as one?

The guys over at HackADay have a great write up on setting your iPhone up as a penetration testing tool with all the goodies like Aircrack-ng and Ettercap.

The first step is to jailbreak your device and setup OpenSSH so that you can tunnel in for the rest of the setup. From there the rest of the setup is just acquiring build tools and compiling pentesting programs

RFID Reader For Your iPhone

Benjamin Blundell built a hardware interface for his jailbroken iPhone that reads RFID signals. By patching in his homebrew hardware to his iPhone via a standard iPhone USB cable the reader detects low-frequency tags and will soon be able to read MIFARE tags as well.

You can bet you will never see this app approved in the official Apple app store, but just imagine how cool it would be to read RFID tags with your iPhone. Check out the video after the break

iControlPad: Gamepad For Your iPhone

Since the release of the iTunes app store the iPhone and iPod touch have really been pushed as the next great portable gaming platform. Game developers have really started to push the limits of the device but the one major stumbling block has only been the “touch only” interface.

The iControlPad looks to change all of that. It’s a case for your iPhone that offers dual analog nubs, a gamepad controller and of course a few buttons. There is also an internal battery that charges your iPhone while you play.

Bad news is that you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to use this since it’s not an official Apple licensed product, but the iControlPad is supported by some of the biggest devs like the boys that make all the cool emulators. If you’re interested in the device, you can can place a pre-order by signing up at their site.

Hacker Hacks Jailbroken iPhone

We all know the dangers of running a jailbroken iPhone. No tech support, the wrath of your carrier, and simple exploits as demonstrated by Dutch hacker. With a little bit of port scanning to find jailbroken iPhones with SSH running he sent users a message that read “Your iPhone’s been hacked because it’s really insecure! Please visit doiop.com/iHacked and secure your iPhone right now! Right now, I can access all your files.”

The URL directs people to Paypal and requests €5 in exchange for instructions that explains how to remove the hack. How did the Dutch hacker get in? All jailbroken iPhones have a default root password, if you forget to change it your left wide open to this kind of attack.

This is more of an annoying attack than anything else. With root access to the phone a lot more could have been done. Remember, if you jailbreak your phone, for the love of God, change the root password.

Jailbreak Resistant iPhone

Reports are flying around the internets that Apple is now shipping iPhones with a new bootrom that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit that was used by the iPhone Dev-Team to jailbreak the iPhone. To be really honest with you I’m surprised it took Apple this long.

MuscleNerd, who is a Dev-Team member, has confirmed that the latest bootrom, iBoot-359.3.2 makes jailbreaking the iPhone impossible for the time being. People thought that the original iPhone would never be jailbroken when it was released too.

There has always been a cat and mouse game between manufactures and hackers. Take Nagravision, the company who creates the client access cards for the parent company of Dish Networks, Echostar. Hackers and Nagravision has been playing this game for years. A new encryption is release and shortly (some times not so shortly) there-after the encryption is broken. I’m sure it will only take some time and some crafty hacker will find another exploit that can be used to jailbreak the iPhone.

iPhone Backgrounder – Multitasking For Your iPhone

Here’s a great app if you current run a jailbroken iPhone of iPod Touch. iPhone Backgrounder brings some much needed functionality that Apple doesn’t want to allow; the ability to run processes in the background.

After installing the App, hold down the home button on the app you want to preserve and it will keep running in the background until you tell it to stop with another home button press. You can also add some XML code and have an application run in the background by default, a neat trick for keeping IM apps open while you do something else.

There are some bugs in the app that still need to be worked out, but if you are willing to put up with them then you can grab the app via Cydia.

iPhone Modem App

iPhone Modem, a jailbroken app for your iPhone, promises 10 second iPhone tethering. The app, which can be download to jailbroken phone via the Cydia application repository, allows you to tether your iPhone to your Mac so that you can use the EDGE or 3G of your phone to surf the internet. I don’t own an iPhone, so I can’t really say if this work as advertised, but if it does it would offer yet another functional use of your iPhone.

You might want to be careful with this one. If AT&T is watching, they can come down on you hard for using something like this, but for casual and light surfing this would be perfect.

Pwnage 2.0.2 Jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.1

The iPhone dev team has just release a new version of their PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3Gs, first gen iPhones and iPod touches that are running the 2.0.1 firmware. Developers recommend upgrading via the original PwnageTool’s built-in update system. This won’t unlock your iPhone 3G, but it will allow you to put on unapproved apps like an NES emulator or give you the ability to ssh into your phone and copy over media or download voicemail messages. Lifehacker has a great step-by-step on jailbreaking your device with PwnageTool.

IPhone-Dev Team Update

It looks like the iPhone dev team hasn’t been resting much since releasing the iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0 a few weeks ago. The team has decided to update their progress. Even with the iPhone 2.0 jailbroken, there still isn’t anyway to unlock a 3G iPhone. They have managed to do other things like downgrade a 3G to an older baseband firmware, which shows you that they have the ability to bypass security checks and run un-signed coded.

One of the nice things about the downgrade is that they have ben able to perfect the precautions they take to prevent bricking. On a side note, the RiP Dev team has been doing some great work on Installer 4 which will help everyone instal software on their iPhones/touches that isn’t from the AppStore.

Rumours: iPhone Application Key Leaked

There have been many rumours flying around the internet that the iPhone application key has been leaked.

What does this mean to the rest of us? Since all iPhone applications must be properly signed for iTunes to process them and for the iPhone to load them, this key suggests that hackers are closer to creating compliant IPA application bundles for home-brew iTunes distribution. With the proper key, developers can create and distribute applications that load through iTunes without Apple’s blessing.

This might just be nothing for now since the SDK is right around the corner, but for the developers that donâ€™t want to play with Apple; you might just be able to install their software without jailbreaking your iPhone or touch soon.

Jailbroken iPhones Might Not Work With SDK

If you rushed into jailbreaking your 1.1.3 firmware you might be in for a bit of a surprise. The guys over at iPhone Atlas have made a good point in one of their blog posts, namely that people who rushed into jailbreaking 1.1.3 might just be screwing themselves up later. The jailbreaking process disables a relevant parts of the devices’ OS called Nikita, which helps with future third part apps.

While itâ€™s not yet confirmed if jailbreaking legit third-party apps from installing or running, it is something to definitely consider when deciding to jailbreak or not.

1.1.3 Gets Jailbroken

Looks like all the people who held back on the 1.1.3 firmware upgrade for their iPhone in hopes of someone jailbreaking the newest firmware will now be rewarded. People no longer have to wait since the iPhone Dev Team release new jailbreaking software yesterday.

There is a Mac and Windows version to get your 1.1.3 on, but I canâ€™t seem to get it to work on the touch. Could just be itâ€™s aimed for the iPhone only, but with the SDK around the corner you might never need to jailbreak your touch again.

Seems like only days after the release of the 1.1.3 firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch some crafty hackers already have it jailbroken. If you are upset about the jailbreak getting broken after the 1.1.3 upgrade there might be hope for you yet as you can see from the video below.

Will we see the jailbreak any day now? Who knows, but the guys at iPhone Atlas are reporting that the hack requires a hardware mod. Probably not for the faint of heart. You never know, with the official SDK just a few weeks away anything is possible.
