I bet if you reached into your computer bag right now you could easily pull out multiple USB cables. You know what I mean, that birds nest of cabling consisting of multiple iPod/iPhone cables and USB mini variants.

Scosche aims to change that for you with their flipSYNC II fob. Much like the key fob of a car, the flipSYNC is a USB cable that folds up nicely into a keychain fob.

The currently offer two models; one with an iPod/iPhone 30-pin connector and one with dual miniUSB/microUSB. They are sleek, small, and durable and will run you $20 a piece. I already have a nice Lacie USB key on my key chain and will soon add one of these cool units.

Apple’s AirPlay is a great technology. It lets you stream music and video wirelessly to Apple products like iPods, iPhones and to the Apple TV. It also can be used to stream to Apple approved hardware like speaker docks, AV receivers and stereo systems. The problem with it, like most Apple technology, if your not on the “Apple approved” list your SOL.

The thought of AirPlay being supported in open source software is unheard of, until now. The Totem media player, which installs by default on most Linux distributions, now has an unofficial plugin that will let you stream media via AirPlay.

Instructions

Clone the git repository

git clone http://git.sukimashita.com/totem-plugin-airplay.git

Move the files you just cloned (make sure you create the appropriate directories if needed)

mv * ~/.local/share/totem/plugins/airplay

That’s it. Start up Totem, enable the plugin and start to enjoy streaming media from any other AirPlay capable device. Now that the open source world has nailed down the AirPlay standard, it shouldn’t be too long before we start to see it supported in things like XBMC or Android.

The second generation Apple TV suddenly looks a lot better as a home theater PC. XBMC, the open-source media center software that is the driving force behind projects like Boxee and Plex has just launched for jailbroken second generation Apple TVs.

The Apple TV iOS port uses Apple’s “VideoToolBox” private acceleration API. This gives XBMC access to the built-in hardware video acceleration included in Apple’s A4 chip, allowing for non-Apple approved HD video playback. You heard me correct, full 1080p video playback on the tiny $99 box. Video playback isn’t the only thing you get, most of the core apps that are in the Desktop or Xbox versions are there as well.

Since the second generation Apple TV runs iOS, developers didn’t stop there. They added an iPhone and iPod touch port which can be installed on jailbroken devices via Cydia. Not a remote application, a full blown XBMC system on your iPhone or iPad. The iPad version tends to be less frustrating to use than the iPhone version, but I’m sure they will work on that.

I hope Apple can see the benefit of XBMC on their devices, it would be an instant hit if it ever hits the App store.

I was just talking to someone from Steam TV Networks about the need for a sturdy dock that can hold up a tablet or phone, something that keeps the device propped up when using it to watch video. Kensington has release just such an item built for the iPhone.

After discovering James Whelton’s SpringBoard.plist hack for the 6G iPod Nano, Steve Throughton-Smith decided to play around with his Nano to see what else he might find.

Steve may very well have stumbled on some kind of DFU-like recovery mode, much like the recovery mode that allows customized firmware (or jailbreaking) to be injected into the iPhone/iPod touch.

Discovered what may be DFU mode: hold down the restart buttons until you get a black screen (it reboots twice) and iTunes sees the device and alerts you.

Afterwards, modified iRecovery to work with the iPod nano (had to add its DFU/Recovery USB ID) and allow it send files, and tested with some files I had extracted from the iPod nano 6G firmware

It seems that people are getting closer and closer to a working jailbreak for the Nano. I might just get back video playback on my Nano sooner than I thought.

By booting up his iPod Nano with a modified SpringBoard.plist file hacker James Whelton was able to remove an app from his screen and replace it with a blank space (Video after the break).

Now this isn’t quite a jailbreak like hack, but it is a small start in the right direction. Today we can remove an app, tomorrow we might be able to add a new one and a week from now we might be able to write our own iPod Nano apps and cause Apple to open a whole new app store dedicated to the nano. Alright so maybe that’s pushing it a bit far, but just think if we could modify the sleep settings of the unit. Yes, we could finally have that iPod Nano watch we have all been waiting for.

You knew it was bound to happen. Ever since Apple announced the new redesigned iPod nano everyone has been referring to it as a watch and now you can turn it into one. I’ve been using the new nano for about a week now and love it. It’s perfect for the gym and it really motivates you to reaching that 10,000 step-a-day goal, and with this wrist watch band from Incipio this might make the perfect all the time watch.

Keep in mind that you will have to change your ipod daily and be okay with hitting the sleep button every time you want to check the time. If your okay with all that then you can pick them up in a variety of colours for $24.99 and they should be ready to ship sometime in October.

The iPhone/iPod touch has quickly become a gaming favorite. There are tons of games for you to enjoy and best of all, it’s small and already in your pocket. The unit is great for games that require nothing more than touch like board games and trivia games, but when it comes to games that require a lot of movement or dexterity like a sports game it can be really hard to use.

Enter the iControlPad which is essentially nothing more that a massive case for your iPhone that adds some buttons and a few joysticks. This is for the hardcore gamer only, not really small and compact as you can see form the picture, but if you like gaming on your iPhone then this is for you.

There is one small downfall, it requires a jailbroken unit to work since it requires some software that is using private api’s that Apple won’t allow. No word on pricing or availability yet, but you can sign up for more info right on their site and be notified when it’s ready to ship.

We are only a few days away from Apple’s press event where it’s rumoured we’ll see an new iTV product and new iPod touch’s. Since it’s right around the corner the leaks just seem to be flying around.

At first glance the above picture might look like the front and back of an iPhone 4. but according to SmartPhoneMedic.com it’s the front and back from a 4th-gen iPod touch. If you belive the rumour then we now know that the new touch’s will have a retina display and glass back much like the iPhone 4 does.

A visual inspection reveals it to have the same fused design as on the iPhone 4, which naturally invites speculation that the retina display will be pulling some PMP duty as well.

You’ve gone out and seen Avatar and now your ready to summon your inner Cameron and shoot the next blockbuster 3D movie but you just can’t seem to come up with the millions of dollars needed to purchase the camera gear you would need, fear now more because you too can now create a super-duper 3D film for under $300 (how was my infomercial pitch there?).

Some great weekend hackers have put together a shopping list of materials needed to pull this off.

• A couple Kodak Zx1 Digital Camcorders
• L-Shaped bracket
• Some nylon washers, wingnuts and screws
• A basic tripod

Since the release of the iTunes app store the iPhone and iPod touch have really been pushed as the next great portable gaming platform. Game developers have really started to push the limits of the device but the one major stumbling block has only been the “touch only” interface.

The iControlPad looks to change all of that. It’s a case for your iPhone that offers dual analog nubs, a gamepad controller and of course a few buttons. There is also an internal battery that charges your iPhone while you play.

Bad news is that you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to use this since it’s not an official Apple licensed product, but the iControlPad is supported by some of the biggest devs like the boys that make all the cool emulators. If you’re interested in the device, you can can place a pre-order by signing up at their site.

Remember the good old days? When you wanted to impress a girl you’d spend all night creating her a mixtape? No, you don’t? Maybe I’m just old.

Justin Cole wanted to relive the good old days while still using modern day technology so he decided to mash together a digital tape adapter and a flash drive.

My new design uses a small mp3 player that I disassembled and placed inside a cassette tape adapter for an iPod. This allows for mp3′s to be played back through a tapedeck. This has all of the ease and technology of an mp3 player with the retro coolness of a mix tape.

Not quite ready for mass production or very easy to build, but if you really really really have a problem typing on your iPhone or iPod Touch you can build one of these “keyboard for your iphone” adapters.

By using an Arduino, a 9 volt battery, an iPhone breakout board, and a PS/2 keyboard, Ben Kurts built this keyboard adapter for his iPhone. The Arduino reads the keyboard input and converts it to a serial signal which is then pulled in by the iPhone via VNC. Not exactly a clean way to get it done but you can be rest assured that you’ll be one of the few people around who has an external keyboard for his/her iPhone or Touch.

Rumour has it that Apple is working on a radio app for the iPhone and the Touch. The app will be similar to what they developed for the iPod Nano. That includes the ability to pause like streams and to fast forward when you decide to resume.

Radio apps for the iPhone are nothing new. Wunder Radio is probably the one single app I use the most. It gives you the ability to listen to 10,000+ radio stations from around the world. I’m sure Apple will build in some sort of revenue model into this. Something like the ability to click on a song your listening to and it will then give you the option to purchase it from the iTunes store.

Car alarm company Viper (which is owned by Directed Electronics) is unveiling a new app for iPhone users that will let customers control certain aspects of their Viper SmartStart-enabled vehicle from their iPhone or iPod Touch.

The app, which is called Viper SmartStart, acts as a virtual keychain which can do things like lock/unlock your car, open then trunk, enable the alarm or start your car. The app uses the iPhone’s data connection which allows you to control your car from anywhere you have a 3G or EDGE connection.

The only problem I have with this app is what do you do when your somewhere that doesn’t give you 3G or EDGE service like an underground garage? If you can deal with that then you can pick up the app for free. As for the SmartStart module for your car, well that’s gonna run you $499 for a new install or $299 for users who already have a Viper alarm system installed. You will also have to pay for a subscription to Viper’s SmartStart service.

Sounds like too costly for nothing more than a glorified key fob. I’ll keep the little box on my keychain and save the loads of cash.

This past week EA Mobile confirmed that Rock Band for the iPhone and the iPod Touch is set to be released this month. So far all we know is that it’s set to be out this month, no idea on pricing yet and that it will come with no less than 20 tracks for you to play along with. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals are all in there based on your difficulty settings. As well as the single person mode you can also do multiplayer via a Bluetooth hook up with other iPhones.

Steve Jobs wasn’t kidding when he said the the iPhone and iPod touch would revolutionize gaming. EA Sports has just released FIFA Soccer 10 for the Apple mobile platform. This is EA’s first attempt in the soccer area on the device but if Madden NFL 10 is something we should be looking at then FIFA 10 will rock.

At $9.99, a somewhat heft price for an iPhone game when you can grab Real Soccer 10 for only $6.99, FIFA 10 promises to deliver more licensed teams as well as a “Be a Pro” mode that will allow you to create a player and track him over multiple seasons.

If you don’t have an iPhone or iPod touch, EA will also be releasing FIFA 10 on all the usual dedicated gaming consoles on October 20th. I’m willing to bet that they will cost a bit more than $10.

Most people who own gadgets that are USB powered have a billion different charging cables. A USB cable to use with your computer, a few wall warts to change your stuff at home or at the office, a car USB charger, hell, some of us even have battery powered altoid tins to charge our iPod’s and Cell Phone’s. What about the poor folk who ride their bikes everywhere they go? Do we have something for you.

Now you can build this not so easy and somewhat complicated device that will charge your gadgets as you pedal around town. Originally created by a group of guys using a grant from MIT. The device, which was originally planned to charge your mp3 player as you run ended up evolving into a bicycle based charger.

If you want to attempt this yourself, you’ll need about $275 and some advanced knowledge of electronics. Although this project isn’t for the faint of heart, if you ride a bike all the time you can charge everything you have on you. Plus, it’s super green and allows you to do your part to help mother nature.

We all know how rumours start swirling around the internet when it comes to Apple. There hasn’t been a major product from Apple that hasn’t had its share or rumours. The iPhone, AppleTV, new iPods, they have all had their share of chat on the internet.

Apple is set to announce some new products tomorrow, and one of the hottest rumours to hit the net these past couple of days is the “brick” laptop. I suppose that the “brick” name might have come from the process of milling out the case from a solid piece of aluminum, hence the “brick”.

A few of the rumours sites over in China have posted various pics of these supposed “brick” Mac Books. What do you think? Real or Fake? I have posted a collection of these pics over on our forums, tell me what you think.

Here’s a great app if you current run a jailbroken iPhone of iPod Touch. iPhone Backgrounder brings some much needed functionality that Apple doesn’t want to allow; the ability to run processes in the background.

After installing the App, hold down the home button on the app you want to preserve and it will keep running in the background until you tell it to stop with another home button press. You can also add some XML code and have an application run in the background by default, a neat trick for keeping IM apps open while you do something else.

There are some bugs in the app that still need to be worked out, but if you are willing to put up with them then you can grab the app via Cydia.

The iPod is considered one of the worlds most stolen item, so let’s just up the ante and wrap it in 24-ct gold. They should sell big red lights that you could wear on your persons announcing to the world that you have more money than you know what to do with. One of the coolest apps that ever rolled out of the iTunes app store was the Apple Remote app that allowed you to control your iTunes or Apple TV via your iPhone or iPod Touch. This has come in quite handy when I can’t find the remote for my Appple TV.

Now you can have that same fun and functionality with your XBMC (Xbox Media Center). The remote application (iTunes Link) allows you to control your XBMC with your iPhone or iPod Touch. You will clearly need an instance of XBMC (They just release a new multi-platform beta) running somewhere. Features include:

I own 4 different iPods. An iPod Video, a 1st gen Nano, an iPod Touch, and my beloved 2nd gen shuffle. Why you ask? They all serve different purposes. I use my Touch for Video, my Video for my entire collection, my nano for my wife, and my shuffle for my driving or running. You can imagine the plethora of cables one has to carry to satisfy this obsession.

That’s why sometime ago I decided to slim down what I needed. Now, my Touch, Video, and Nano can all use the same cable, but my shuffle required something different. So I built this super tiny USB dongle that would do just that, replace the bulky shuffle dock. Video after the break.

Here’s what you will need ..

• USB Type A connector
• 4 Pole 3.5mm Connector
• Wire
• Soldering Iron
• Patience

Connect the shortest length possible of wire between the points listed in the above diagram.

These contact points can be small and quite tricky so take your time with doing so.

Once you have soldered up the contacts use a multimeter to make sure that there are no shorts between the contacts. You want to make sure that no solder has spilled between the contacts, this would be bad and could cause a short and kill your ipod.

Use some heat shrink tubing to clean the whole thing up and make it look professional.

3M is reportedly close to rolling out a super tiny, portable digital projector. This tiny unit could be used to project pictures, powerpoint slide shows, pr0n, movies, or whatever else you might want to slap on a wall or screen.

The lucky guys at Popular Science got their hands on the MPro 110 and reported that after plugging a DVD player into the device they were able to project a movie up to 11 inches wide on various pieces of furnature and walls.

When the projector hits the shelves it will cost $359 and will have the ability to connect up a laptop, digital camera, iPod, and any other mobile device that outputs and image. At that price this would be a perfect item to keep in your bag so that when on the road you could easily show a presentation or lay back in your hotel room and watch a movie on the wall. Although, at 11 inches you would need to have everyone huddled around the screen in order to actually watch anything. Let’s hope that this is just a start in the right direction.

The iPhone Dev Team strikes again. If you really want to run jail-broken apps on your 2.1 iPhone or iPod touch, the iPhone Dev Team has just released PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.1 devices.

The Dev Team has worked around iTunes 8 without having to patch the program, so jail-breakers can try the new tool without any fear of having to alter iTunes in any way.

The is one caveat: this does NOT work with the new iPod Touch 2g, it will only work with iPhone and first gen iPod Touches only. Maybe in the coming future the Dev Team will have a fix for you Touch 2g owners. Why not, they have been able to do everything else already.

So it seems that the iPhone and iPod touch is leaving a trail of what you’ve been up to, even if you don’t want it to. Do you know (and love) all of those cool swooshing transition effects that happen when you hit the home button or switch pages in Mobile Safari? Well that’s your problem right there. Seems that the iPhone takes a snap shot of your screen to produce those nice transition then it deletes them… the thing is, it don’t really delete them, more like a quick delete without an overwrite. Anyone with physical access to your iPhone and some hacking skills can build a trail of what you have been doing based on those screenshots that haven’t been deleted.

This can be a serious problem if people have access to your physical unit, but most people who find an iPhone or iPod touch would be more interested in selling it or using it for their own personal use. But since the hack has been demonstrated, it would be nice if Apple could pony up and fix the problem. This way if you even have your phone confiscated by law enforcement agencies you would be embarrassed by all those trips to dateanerd.com

Now that the “Let’s Rock” even has come and gone, let’s take a look at what Apple has brought into our laps.

HD TV Shows

Right off the bat Steve announced the arrival of HD TV shows to the iTunes store. The shows will cost you $2.99 a pop (instead of the $1.99 you pay for SD shows), but unlike HD Movies, HD TV shows can be watched on your computer, not just an Apple TV. Also, after a much publicized breakup, NBC is back. I wonder if they came back on hands and knees.

iTunes 8

The newest version of the worlds greatest music management software was also released today. A new Pandora-like “Genius” feature is now included that can generate playlists of songs that go together based on a seed song you pick. I’ve been playing with this tonight and my Genius seems quite stupid, but I’m sure they will smarten him up in the next update.

New Nanos

We all saw it coming. Kevin Rose let the world know a few weeks ago that the “Zune” like nano would make an appearance at todays event, and it did. The new nano is “the thinnest iPod” ever made. It has an oval, tapered shape with a black wheel. The new Nano can also create Genius playlists on-the-fly without the need to connect to iTunes. You will also get a built in accelerometer like the iPhone and Touch so that you can view Cover Flow art, photos, and video when turned sideways.

New iPod Touch

The new touch has the same 3.5″ display but is thinner with a tapered stainless steel back. The touch will also gain integrated volume controls on the side and a built in speaker. You will also be able to channel the Genius without the need of iTunes. The new touch is rated for 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video. 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, or 32 GB for $399.

OS 2.1 for iPhones and iPod Touches

Rolled into all of the excitement today, Steve also announced the arrival of the 2.1 firmware for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. The major update includes fixes for better battery life, dropped calls, backing up speed, and general bug fixes.

One More Thing

The was no “One More Thing”. Too bad, I was hoping a rev on MacBook Pro’s since my son spilled a full bottle of water on my MacBook Pro yesterday. I guess I will have to go out now and just buy whatever the local Apple store has in stock.

Every night I fall asleep listening to my iPod, and every morning I wake up with it dead as a door nail. This cleaver hack actually came to me via my wife. She said “You put USB ports in everything else, why not the alarm clock”. So I did. As you can see from an old episode of The Lab With Leo some time ago I demonstrated exactly how you go about adding some powered USB ports to your alarm clock to keep everything from your cell phone to iPod fully charged.

Here’s what your gonna need.

• Alarm Clock with an internal power supply of 9–12V DC
• PCB Mounted USB Port
• +5V Fixed Voltage Regulator (7805)
• Multimeter

First thing you want to do is open up your alarm clock and make sure that the internal power supply is giving out 9–12V DC using your multimeter.

Once we have satisfied those requirements, your going to want to find a suitable location to house the usb port, something that will not interfere with the internal componets of the alarm clock once you put it back together

With the USB port mounted you are going to want to wire the USB port and the 7805 as per the instructions that come with the voltage regulator. Make sure to leave enough slack with regards to wiring if you ever need to open the alarm clock back up again.

Voila, power to your usb device via your alarm clock.

It’s really hard not to start believing all of the hype around the leaked shot’s of what very well might be the next iPod nano. Kevin Rose started the whole ball of wax rolling with some fuzzy shots (why is every rumoured gadget that leaks on to the net have to be fuzzy?), and now more and more credible shots creep out.

I guess as the day draws nearer we will only see more and more of these shots claiming to be the new nano. Only time will tell.

I tend not to jump into iPod rumours since I have been wrong so many times, but since Kevin Rose release some info that was sent to him about Apple revving their iPod line to include a very Zune-ish style nano it’s hard not to say something.

iLounge has gotten their hands on what they are claiming to be dimensional drawings of the new iPod nano and a “Touch 2G” which is an iPod touch replacement with iPhone 3G specs in mind.

Take this with a grain of salt, most fakes follow the line of any other rumour that has hit the internets, but knowing Kevin Rose personally, I don’t see why he would start a rumour like this. I haven’t seen the documentation he said he received, but I do put some confidence in him that this might just be real. Check his video out below.

Many people have tried to capalize on the iPod fame with various adapters, docks, and cases, but a fridge with an iPod dock, tell me it isn’t so. Slovenian appliance manufacture Gorenje has designed this combination fridge-freezer with a built-in iPod dock, including speakers. Allowing you to listed to music or podcasts while cooking.

They launched their product at the 2008 IFA fair in Germany this weekend and there is no information yet on availability or pricing, but you can be sure that this will be a hot item with people who have to much money and no idea what to do with it.

I used to be the resident hardware hacker on the Lab with Leo Laporte show that aired in Canada and Australia, and while combing through some of my segments I stumbled on something I did last year that just saved my MacBook. That’s a total of 3 months worth of free service. I’m sure that is costing Apple millions of dollars, not to mention the stock hit that it will take in the morning.

I’m not sure why it’s so hard for a company that has been held in the highest light for doing no wrong by geeks everywhere to screw up a project so badly. Why is it so hard for them to just get it right the first time? They did it with the iPod, the iPhone, and even the iMac. Maybe they should have called the service iMobileMe, that might have made it work.

Ever wonder how to carry current in fabric? Me either, but if you have ever wanted to make your own e-style vest with all of the wires hidden this is perfect. Imagine having your iPod in one pocket, a battery pack in another, and your headphones all connected together with the wiring sewn right into the fabric. Plusea on on Instructables has put together a detailed write-up on making a USB cable partly out of stretchy cotton fabric. If the idea of having an e-style vest doesn’t rock your boat you could always wire up a jacket that shocks you every now and then, if you are into that kind of stuff of course.

The iPhone dev team has just release a new version of their PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3Gs, first gen iPhones and iPod touches that are running the 2.0.1 firmware. Developers recommend upgrading via the original PwnageTool’s built-in update system. This won’t unlock your iPhone 3G, but it will allow you to put on unapproved apps like an NES emulator or give you the ability to ssh into your phone and copy over media or download voicemail messages. Lifehacker has a great step-by-step on jailbreaking your device with PwnageTool.

Apple has just released the 2.0.1 firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch. With it you can expect the much-awaited “Bug fixes” that I hope will fix some of the plaguing crashes that we all have been experiencing.

Weighing in at 242 mb I hope it contains a load of “Bug Fixes”. As soon as I get it installed I will pick it apart and let you all know.

I love my iPod but most people have the same complaint – you love having portable video but can’t stand watching said video on a tiny screen. There just must be a light at the end of the tunnel real soon. Optoma’s Pico Projector, which is now in the prototype stage, is a mini projector for your cellphone, iPod, or other portable video device.

The Optoma is the first pico projector with DLP technology which should offer us a decent picture. Only time will tell is this product will be a success, but it should would be cool to display some video on a hotel wall or on the back of a food tray on an airline.

After all of the rumours (what else is new) the 3G iPhone is finally here.

• Hits the shelves on July 11th (in Canada too!)
• $199 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB
• Black, with a white 16GB model

In a clear action of trying to play catch up to Google, Apple also announced a suite of software that will be revolutionary. (If they decided to roll it out in 2002). MobileMe is a much needed update to the .Mac system. MobileMe will let users log into a website using a billion dollar url; me.com, to access their email, address book, and calendar for a mere $99 a year, you know, much better than Google’s $0 a year charge.

On the plus side it will now be compatible with Windows, errr, oh yeah, Google’s bee there and done that too. Sounds like it should me meh.com and not me.com

On February 5th of this year, Apple filed to protect and amend their trademark in relation to “hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games”.

Could this mean that Apple is getting into the handheld gaming business or is this a simple extension of their patent to cover gaming on their iPods? Remember that Apple posted a job in September of last year for a “Game Producer/Designer”. This too might just be for the iPod line of games, or it might be their continuing effort to take over the world.

Mozilla has just revealed a first look into its new Mobile Firefox interface. The new mobile browser will come in two flavours: one for touch screen devices like the iPhone and most PDA’s, and one for non touch devices, like most cell phones.

Firefox mobile offers a familiar layout to all you iPhone and iPod touch users out there. Taking there cues from mobile Safari the main screen offers a similar layout. Back and forward navigation buttons, a bookmark button, and a retractable address bar.

There are some additions over Apple’s mobile browser: a zoom button and a tab button that offers a different experience of the Safari one. When you press the tab button it will display up to four tab previews on the same screen for easy switching.

I have a hard time keeping my white ipod earphone or my Shure E3’s. I find them to small to keep in my eye, they slip out all the time, maybe I need a set of these to pluck into my ears. The 500xl speakers look just like the plain headphones everyone gets with an ipod, except 500 times the size.

A quick trip to your local big box hardware store and a few bucks and you too can turn that spare room into a professionally lit porn natural model studio you have always dreamed of having. Just like was expected the blog-o-sphere went crazy over the Macworld keynote by Steve Jobs. Almost every blog was live-blogging the event, live-blogging the live blogs, and live blogging the live blogging of the live blogging (you get the idea).

This is why I wanted to wait until all of the mass hysteria over the keynote was done and over with before I weighed in on what happened. Unfortunately the iPhone coming to Canada didn’t happen as I thought it would. I guess the whole ComWave Apple trademark dispute still hasn’t been resolved. Apple has a lot of money, and money can always buy you what you want.

Here’s my lonely take on the 4 things SJ talked about.

Time Capsule: A brilliant idea in my opinion. Time Machine has become the single feature of Leopard that made the upgrade worth-while. A built in backup solution that just works and works well, is something that every major operating system was lacking. Time Capsule takes it one step further. You no longer need to have a dedicated drive connected to each of your machines to preform backups, with the Time Capsule (essentially a airport extreme with a built in hard drive) backups can now be done over the network. With a 500gb and 1tb model set to ship, you should be able to backup all of your macs without a problem. I wonder how long it’s going to take some crafty hackers to create an open source version of this so that we don’t have to be limited to the dedicated unit.

iPhone and iPod Touch: Nice features but in my opinion stuff that should have been there from the beginning. An SDK was long over due, and the basic iPhone apps like Mail should have been on the iPod touch right out of the gate. Plus, what the hell is the deal with the $20 charge for the touch features? Just because they can call anyone they are being penalized. I really thought the Canadian thing would go through, but I’m sure they still have a stickler with ComWave which has been using the name iPhone here well before Apple introduced the product.

AppleTV and Movies: This was probably the single rumour that had been floating around that was correct. We all knew that Apple was planning on getting it the Movie rental business. Revamped AppleTV’s and free firmware upgrades for current AppleTV owners will bring Movie rentals right to your TV without the need of a computer. The AppleTV upgrade will allow you to purchase or rent movies directly from it’s interface without having to use iTunes on a separate computer. You can also subscribe to podcasts and videocast right on the unit. Fox also announced that they will be shipping DVD’s with embedded digital copies of the movie so you no longer need to rip em to watch them on your iPod.

Macbook Air: I want one, i want one, and i want one. Now that i got that out of the way. The worlds lightest laptop. I don’t know how that justify doubling the price when you move to a solid state drive, but it’s one hell of a jump from $1700 to $3000 based on a hard drive choice. I wonder how many will flock to purchase these units.

I was expecting something completely out of left field, which we didn’t get. Call me crazy but I think this was one of the most over hyped Macworld keynotes I have ever seen. Yes the Air is nice toy but it’s still just a notebook.

Hackers l3lack J4ck, The Revival, and djdut2000 have slapped together a custom firmware for 5G ipods to mimic the iPod Touch interface. Actually, it’s got a bit of the Touch and a bit of the Classic all mixed together. Clearly without the real on-screen touch system that the iPod Touch offers it takes some getting use to, but it actually looks quite good. There are a few bugs that the guys are working on but all around it looks quite polished.

Remember, as with using custom firmware in any product you very well might be voiding your warranty or risking bricking your iPod, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I’m just a sucker for a good iPod hack since it’s the 2 most used device I own (Yes, the first is my crackberry). If your willing to put your iPod’s life in peril then this hack is for you. Actually, it’s not that bad, a steady hand and some decent soldering skills is all you really need to cram a Jabra A120S music bluetooth adapter into your iPod for wireless listening fun. Apparently on new years day the guys at touchmods will release a VoIP app for the touch. The app will work with any SIP provider (including all you hardcore out there that are running asterisk) and will require a special microphone adapter that the guys are already pre-ordering on there site right now. They also have a bunch of video of the software actually working where they are making calls with the touch.

I’m already on the microphone order list, hope to get me one soon!

A new iPod touch owner stumbles across a test/factory Menu which shows a bunch of status icons, most intriguing of all of them is the Bluetooth icon. Could the unit have the capability for bluetooth? Only time will tell as these units start to hit store shelves.

Here’s something that I’m sure will catch on like lightning, at least is should somewhere in the world. Charms for your earphones, what a brilliant idea, why didn’t I think of that. The first one’s to hit the market are Hello Kitty ones, no necessarily my first choice, but then again someone somewhere will eventually buy them.

Have designers really come to the end of their creativity? I mean, we have seen Prada Cell Phones and diamond encrusted iPod‘s, now a external disk unit that actually contains gold?

Ora-Ito, designing brain child behind the LaCie golden disk which is a 500GB storage unit says that the silhouette of the device has been inspired by flowing golden liquid. I’m sure it will be a focal point, but I’d be scarred as hell if someone stole it!

Gizmodo’s got shots up of the new Zune 2 and Zune Flash players. Not to sure if these shots are real or not, but the above image shows an 80GB version and 4GB and 8GB flash models. If these indeed are real, has Microsoft not learned it’s lesson with the original Zune? The iPod killer Not!

Philips just announced the Power2Charge and Power2Go chargers as part of their Power4Life line. These are USB based chargers, including the big mama-jama SCM7880 (pictured), can hold up to 60 hours of juice for all your usb needs. Charge your cell phone, iPod, Blackberry, and anything that charges via USB. It also has an LED on the front that will let you know how much juice there is left, and it also comes with six connector tips to hook all of those other gadgets that don’t charge via USB. I’m on the road quite a bit. I love my iPod Video for that exact reason; I can bring movies, TV shows, and music with me in my back pocket, literally.
