If your car doesn’t come with some sort of built in iPhone control then you know your limited to bluetooth or cable hook-up to enjoy the tunes on your phone. If you want to eliminate the need for all those wires then the O Car stereo deck from Oxygen Audio might be something to consider.

The unit turns your iPhone itself into your car stereo by allowing users to control of the stereo functions right from their iPhone; Internet radio stations, GPS navigation, Google maps and pretty much anything your iPhone can play or do. For US$349, the O Car has pre-amp outs, 4×55 watts of power, FM/AM presets and supports the iPhone 3G/3GS/4. The price seems a little steep, but if you want to enjoy streaming apps like Pandora and don’t want all of the clutter on your front seat it’s one of you’re only choices.

Turn Your iPhone Into An IR Remote

By using Bluetooth technology, the UnityRemote box takes orders from your iPhone and transmits those commands via IR to any IR device in view including your TV, cable box or satellite reciever.

The app that you install on your iPhone to control IR devices not only allows you to send single commands but allows you to create macros (called “actions”) that will follow a set of pre-programmed commands to your device. For example, you can set an action to turn on your TV, change it’s input to your Blu-ray, turn on your Blu-ray player and start playing a disc.

Since the iPhone doesn’t come with a built in IR transmitter, this adds more functionality to your already multi-functional device. Reminds me of the old days of IR Commander on my Palm.

iPhone For Pen Testing

The iPhone has quickly become more than your average smart phone, it really is a computer in your pocket. So why not use it as one?

The guys over at HackADay have a great write up on setting your iPhone up as a penetration testing tool with all the goodies like Aircrack-ng and Ettercap.

The first step is to jailbreak your device and setup OpenSSH so that you can tunnel in for the rest of the setup. From there the rest of the setup is just acquiring build tools and compiling pentesting programs

iPhone Spy Stick

How scary is it to know that something as simple as a USB stick can pull data from your iPhone (with some limitations). You really don’t need to be super scared just yet since the iPhone Spy Stick will only run under Windows and will only work with iPhones running iOS 3.2.1 and earlier, but the company claims it will have an iPhone 4 version sometime in October.

How it works is simple, you pull the stick and iPhone into a machine and run the included software. You can grab deleted texts, calendar events, pics, and contact info. You can also grab locations tracked via GPS, voice memos, recent map searches and your web history.

The supplier boasts that it “Looks like an ordinary USB flash drive – no one will suspect that it’s a professional grade forensics tool.” Maybe some one should tell them about the “iPhone Spy Stick” logo that’s on it.

Photoshop On Your iPhone

10 years ago most of us would struggle with not only the cost of Photoshop but the cost of the hardware needed just to run it let alone do anything with it. Amazingly enough in todays day and age you can now carry Photoshop in your pocket.

Alright, alright, it’s not CS3 or anything it’s actually 1.0, but it’s still super cool on the geek factor scale. This demo was released to about 50 people who recently attended the Photoshop 20th anniversary event and will never see the light of day on the app store. Doesn’t mean that I want it, I want it bad!

Drive A Car With Your iPhone, Again

A few weeks ago we showed you how some smart peeps got together to write some custom software and hardware to control a minivan via an iPhone. They did all of that for the Darpa Urban Challenge and all of it will probably never see the light of day. Now the guys over at Waterloo Labs have decided to jump into the whole “control a car with your iphone” thing with both feet and actually show us how they got their iPhone to control the steering, brakes and acceleration on a full size car.

I don’t suggest you actually go out and do this, especially not the surfing on the top of the car while controlling it with your iPhone. That could end up really bad for you. Check the video out of all the crazy action after the break.

iControlPad: Gamepad For Your iPhone

Since the release of the iTunes app store the iPhone and iPod touch have really been pushed as the next great portable gaming platform. Game developers have really started to push the limits of the device but the one major stumbling block has only been the “touch only” interface.

The iControlPad looks to change all of that. It’s a case for your iPhone that offers dual analog nubs, a gamepad controller and of course a few buttons. There is also an internal battery that charges your iPhone while you play.

Bad news is that you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to use this since it’s not an official Apple licensed product, but the iControlPad is supported by some of the biggest devs like the boys that make all the cool emulators. If you’re interested in the device, you can can place a pre-order by signing up at their site.

iPhone Safari Bug Could Cost You Cash

Here’s one thing you don’t hear of too often, a serious bug in Apple’s iPhone version of Safari that could end up cost you, the user, some serious cash.

Although it’s not a very common bug but thanks to someone who probably spend countless hours trying to poke a hole in Apple’s mobile device, all iPhone users might avoid being hit with extra operator costs.

Estonian Apple site AppleSpot discovered the bug in question. If an iPhone user visits a site which uses Motion-JPEG (usually found on websites that show live feeds of web cams) in Safari, Safari will continue to use up bandwidth even after it’s closed. Safari is one of the few apps on the iPhone that is allowed to run in the background. So let’s say you have a web page up that uses Motion-JPEG streams and even if that site is in another tab or worse yet, Safari has been closed, the stream will continue and if your on a mobile carriers network then bandwidth will continue to rack up.

Now just imagine you were traveling outside your home country where you would be nailed with international data roaming charges and you decided to visit that ~~sexy nurse pay live stream~~ nature wildlife live cam, you could easily rack up some serious charges. The guys at AppleSpot have claimed to rack up over 740 MB in silently streamed bandwidth in one hour of testing. That would cost something like $3,000 in international roaming charges. Yikes!

Use Your iPhone To Control Your Car

You knew it was bound to happen. With the iPhone already having apps to control everything from your iTunes to a remote computer you knew that someone would come up with an app to control a car.

The Spirit of Berlin team have developed an iPhone app that remotely controls a minivan. They developed the app for the 2007 Darpa Urban Challenge, so the likelihood of you getting the app from the app store is slim to none.

The iPhone connects with the driving circuitry via WiFi and offers a button for gas and brake as well as a wheel to turn the vehicle. The camera mounted on the front of the minivan transmits video to the iPhone in real-time.

In the video below you can see the operator in the camera’s view on the iPhone. It seems that the top speed of the van is limited (thank God!). This is every big kids dream, a real live RC of an actual car, problem is that this can be extremely dangerous. Plus, WiFi? I hope that their is some sort of kill switch if the van goes out of range or else there can be some serious consequences. Check out the video after the break.

Tap Tap Revenge Metallica For The iPhone

So I went to the Metallica concert the other night here in Toronto (it’s my 15th time seeing them live. Yes, if you are asking, I am a fan!) and decided that maybe I was having an early mid-life crisis and wanted to walk down the path of my early life as a dedicated hardcore Metallica fan. As a dedicated fan I scoured the band’s website to catch up on the happenings with the metal legends and stumbled upon their iPhone app, TapTap Revenge: Metallica.

Tapulous, the company famous for it’s addictive line of TapTap games has worked with the band to release a Metallica themed version of it’s TapTap Revenge games aptly called: TapTap Revenge: Metallica. The dedicated version of the game allows users to poke through 10 tracks of some of the bands most famous songs like “Enter Sandman” and “One”.

The game gives you the option to play in a fast-paced arcade mode where you are challenged with bombs and other objects. Career Mode allows you to work your way through the track list and there is even a Bluetooth battle mode that allows you to challenge other players via Bluetooth.

I’ll be honest, if your not a hardcore Metallica fan you might not enjoy this, but if you consider yourself a member of the Metal Militia then what are you waiting for? It’s only $4.99, it’s worth it if not for the music alone.

ReelDirector: Video Editing For Your iPhone

If you own an iPhone 3GS then you know how nice it is to be able to trim video clips right on your phone. At the very least that should get you a somewhat semi-professional video that doesn’t have a lot of fluff at the beginning or end of your clip. What if you wanted to do more? What if you wanted to do a transition or add a title? You were forced to use a computer to do your editing. Well with the release of ReelDirector you will now be able to all that and more right from your iPhone 3GS.

Final Cut Pro or Express it’s not, but it does give you some nice control and some nice editing features. Think of it as a stripped down version of iMovie. You won’t be recording and editing an award winning piece with this app, but you will be able to clean up and add some effects to those short clips before you post them on you tube.

Rock Band For iPhone Now Available

You can now head over to the iTunes App Store and pick up Rock Band for your iPhone for $10. One of the most anticipated games for Apple’s mobile gaming device lacks all of the hype that was built around it.

I decided to dish out the $10 today to play it and besides suffering some serious cramping of the hands it really didn’t live up to all of the hype.

Sure it’s got multiplayer support via bluetooth so you can jam out with your friends but what happened to some of the cool features I enjoy on the console version like drum fills for overdrive? Mashing my fingers against the screen just didn’t have the same feeling as holding a guitar or actually hitting the drum pads.

If you don’t like the 20 songs that it comes with, you can download others in a two-song pack for a buck. I personally wouldn’t bother. I’d rather spend my buck on some other mind numbing game or useless app.

If you want to experience all of the fun that you get when playing rock band then take your console and instruments with you everywhere you go because you’ll be pleasantly disappointed if you spend your hard earned cash on this game.

Jailbreak Resistant iPhone

Reports are flying around the internets that Apple is now shipping iPhones with a new bootrom that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit that was used by the iPhone Dev-Team to jailbreak the iPhone. To be really honest with you I’m surprised it took Apple this long.

MuscleNerd, who is a Dev-Team member, has confirmed that the latest bootrom, iBoot-359.3.2 makes jailbreaking the iPhone impossible for the time being. People thought that the original iPhone would never be jailbroken when it was released too.

There has always been a cat and mouse game between manufactures and hackers. Take Nagravision, the company who creates the client access cards for the parent company of Dish Networks, Echostar. Hackers and Nagravision has been playing this game for years. A new encryption is release and shortly (some times not so shortly) there-after the encryption is broken. I’m sure it will only take some time and some crafty hacker will find another exploit that can be used to jailbreak the iPhone.

iPhone Keyboard, Sort Of

Not quite ready for mass production or very easy to build, but if you really really really have a problem typing on your iPhone or iPod Touch you can build one of these “keyboard for your iphone” adapters.

By using an Arduino, a 9 volt battery, an iPhone breakout board, and a PS/2 keyboard, Ben Kurts built this keyboard adapter for his iPhone. The Arduino reads the keyboard input and converts it to a serial signal which is then pulled in by the iPhone via VNC. Not exactly a clean way to get it done but you can be rest assured that you’ll be one of the few people around who has an external keyboard for his/her iPhone or Touch.

Apple Working On Radio App

Rumour has it that Apple is working on a radio app for the iPhone and the Touch. The app will be similar to what they developed for the iPod Nano. That includes the ability to pause like streams and to fast forward when you decide to resume.

Radio apps for the iPhone are nothing new. Wunder Radio is probably the one single app I use the most. It gives you the ability to listen to 10,000+ radio stations from around the world. I’m sure Apple will build in some sort of revenue model into this. Something like the ability to click on a song your listening to and it will then give you the option to purchase it from the iTunes store.

Unlock Your Car With Your iPhone

Car alarm company Viper (which is owned by Directed Electronics) is unveiling a new app for iPhone users that will let customers control certain aspects of their Viper SmartStart-enabled vehicle from their iPhone or iPod Touch.

The app, which is called Viper SmartStart, acts as a virtual keychain which can do things like lock/unlock your car, open then trunk, enable the alarm or start your car. The app uses the iPhone’s data connection which allows you to control your car from anywhere you have a 3G or EDGE connection.

The only problem I have with this app is what do you do when your somewhere that doesn’t give you 3G or EDGE service like an underground garage? If you can deal with that then you can pick up the app for free. As for the SmartStart module for your car, well that’s gonna run you $499 for a new install or $299 for users who already have a Viper alarm system installed. You will also have to pay for a subscription to Viper’s SmartStart service.

Sounds like too costly for nothing more than a glorified key fob. I’ll keep the little box on my keychain and save the loads of cash.

Okay so there really isn’t a specific app on the iPhone for your cocaine dealers out there (although i can imagine how any one of the million converter apps could come in handy). But there is this cleaver fake looking iPhone spotted in the Netherlands which is really a digital scale.

Now I have seem my fair share of fake looking iPhones but this one takes the ~~coke~~ cake. All jokes aside, and I have been waiting to make that one since I first laid eyes on this picture, drugs are bad. Stay away from them.

iPhone Coming To Telus, A CDMA Carrier

Looks like Apple and Telus will break the exclusivity bond here in Canada as Telus is now reporting that they will be offering the iPhone 3G S here in Canada in November.

Funny thing about all of this is that Telus is a CDMA carrier. Could this signal the end to the GSM only iPhone? Could people in the US possibly see the iPhone on other carriers like Verison as well?

Pricing and availability still haven’t been posted, but as soon as we know more details we will pass them on.

iPhone 3G Baseband Almost Cracked

In true iPhone-Dev Team fashion, the iPhone 3G baseband has almost been cracked. What does this mean to the average user? Carrier independence. Cracking the baseband allows for hacked code to run at the telecomm level. This is exactly how the iPhone-Dev team brought freedom to the first-gen iPhone last year.

Sadly you still have to sign up for an AT&T contact on site before you can get your hands on the 2nd-gen iPhone, but with the ability of “ulocking” available, it shouldn’t be too long before we see used iPhones making their way onto Ebay.

Apple Drops NDA

After much pressure from the community, Apple has finally decided to drop the NDA from released iPhone software. According to the company the NDA was an unnecessary obstacle for developers.

To our developers

We have decided to drop the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for released iPhone software.

We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before. While we have filed for hundreds of patents on iPhone technology, the NDA added yet another level of protection. We put it in place as one more way to help protect the iPhone from being ripped off by others.

However, the NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software. Developers will receive a new agreement without an NDA covering released software within a week or so. Please note that unreleased software and features will remain under NDA until they are released.

Thanks to everyone who provided us constructive feedback on this matter.

Now I wish they would drop the gag order around iPhone app rejections so that developers can actually talk about it.

iPhone Modem App

iPhone Modem, a jailbroken app for your iPhone, promises 10 second iPhone tethering. The app, which can be download to jailbroken phone via the Cydia application repository, allows you to tether your iPhone to your Mac so that you can use the EDGE or 3G of your phone to surf the internet. I don’t own an iPhone, so I can’t really say if this work as advertised, but if it does it would offer yet another functional use of your iPhone.

You might want to be careful with this one. If AT&T is watching, they can come down on you hard for using something like this, but for casual and light surfing this would be perfect.

PwnageTool And QuickPwn For 2.1

The iPhone Dev Team strikes again. If you really want to run jail-broken apps on your 2.1 iPhone or iPod touch, the iPhone Dev Team has just released PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.1 devices.

The Dev Team has worked around iTunes 8 without having to patch the program, so jail-breakers can try the new tool without any fear of having to alter iTunes in any way.

The is one caveat: this does NOT work with the new iPod Touch 2g, it will only work with iPhone and first gen iPod Touches only. Maybe in the coming future the Dev Team will have a fix for you Touch 2g owners. Why not, they have been able to do everything else already.

iPhone Keeps Pic Of Everything You Do

So it seems that the iPhone and iPod touch is leaving a trail of what you’ve been up to, even if you don’t want it to. Do you know (and love) all of those cool swooshing transition effects that happen when you hit the home button or switch pages in Mobile Safari? Well that’s your problem right there. Seems that the iPhone takes a snap shot of your screen to produce those nice transition then it deletes them… the thing is, it don’t really delete them, more like a quick delete without an overwrite. Anyone with physical access to your iPhone and some hacking skills can build a trail of what you have been doing based on those screenshots that haven’t been deleted.

This can be a serious problem if people have access to your physical unit, but most people who find an iPhone or iPod touch would be more interested in selling it or using it for their own personal use. But since the hack has been demonstrated, it would be nice if Apple could pony up and fix the problem. This way if you even have your phone confiscated by law enforcement agencies you would be embarrassed by all those trips to dateanerd.com

iPhone Document Scanner

Here’s a neat cardboard iPhone document scanner rig. Cincinnati design student Kyle A Koch designed this cleaver contraption that suspends your iPhone just the right height to have it snap shots of paper documents, essentially turning the whole thing into a document scanner, sort of.

Now that we can snap stills of our hardcopies why can’t someone just create a barcode scanner for the iPhone. We have Delicious Library for the Mac that already does something similar, what is so hard about it?

Leaked New iPod Touch Dimensions?

I tend not to jump into iPod rumours since I have been wrong so many times, but since Kevin Rose release some info that was sent to him about Apple revving their iPod line to include a very Zune-ish style nano it’s hard not to say something.

iLounge has gotten their hands on what they are claiming to be dimensional drawings of the new iPod nano and a “Touch 2G” which is an iPod touch replacement with iPhone 3G specs in mind.

Take this with a grain of salt, most fakes follow the line of any other rumour that has hit the internets, but knowing Kevin Rose personally, I don’t see why he would start a rumour like this. I haven’t seen the documentation he said he received, but I do put some confidence in him that this might just be real. Check his video out below.

OpenClip Is No More

Remember OpenClip? It was supposed to be an open framework for implementing copy and paste functionality to the iPhone. If Apple wanted to implement copy and paste they would have done so already or they will do it soon, OpenClip was a notable effort to work around the limitation or the forgetfulness of Apple.

OpenClip used a loophole that made it possible for apps to peek into each others home folders, thereby creating a temporary area for copy and paste data. The only problem is that the 2.1 firmware will no longer allow apps to do that.

Apps that use OpenClip will no longer be able to copy and paste between applications. However, applications can still utilize a persistent way to store data inside the application, meaning that copy and paste within the app will still work fine. And on top of that, apps that utilize only one form (either copy or paste) can disable interface elements when Apple axes OpenClip.

Goodbye great idea, we barely knew thee. I hope that Apple finally opens their eyes to the need for some sort of copy and paste on the iPhone/touch.

Rooms: IRC Client For Your iPhone

Rooms is the first known IRC app for the iPhone, one of the things that the unit has lacked along with chat and copy & paste. For those of you who just can’t be away from your usual hangout place then this is for you. The app is more like a “lite” IRC client, it limits on a lot of the features people have come use to in an IRC like like the ability to enter slash commands like /op or /me and it has no DCC capabilities either.

Version 1 still has some bugs that need to be ironed out, but for $0.99 you really can’t complain if you just absolutely have to be in an IRC room.

Copy-And-Paste On An iPhone

It’s really amazing how Apple designed such an amazing product like the iPhone and left out one of the most useful and basic features, cut and paste.

OpenClip is an open-source project dedicated to brining cut and paste functionality to the iPhone. Apple should count themselves luck since all of the fanboys are doing the work for them.

iPhone Firmware 2.0.2 Is Out

A new iPhone update just hit the servers. Version 2.0.2 is described as a bug fix release. As always a version can be downloaded directly from Apple’s servers or through the Update feature in iTunes. If you have jailbroken your phone then this update will de-pwn your phone.

Custom iPhone Light-Up Apple Logo

With Apple selling upwards of 3 million iPhones already I bet you are looking for that extra little way to stand out in a crowd. Why not light up the Apple logo on the back of your iPhone. iPhones.ru has a teaser of an iPhone hack that causes the Apple logo on the back to light up whenever the screen is turned on. Details are still sketchy, but it looks to me like the hack involves replacing the metal backplate with an LED equipped one; custom software also allows you to select the brightness of the glow independently of the screen brightness.

I’m not sure if the are going to be selling kits to let you do this at home, but if they do we will let you know.

Pwnage 2.0.2 Jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.1

The iPhone dev team has just release a new version of their PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3Gs, first gen iPhones and iPod touches that are running the 2.0.1 firmware. Developers recommend upgrading via the original PwnageTool’s built-in update system. This won’t unlock your iPhone 3G, but it will allow you to put on unapproved apps like an NES emulator or give you the ability to ssh into your phone and copy over media or download voicemail messages. Lifehacker has a great step-by-step on jailbreaking your device with PwnageTool.

Apple Can Remotely Remove Apps

Big brother really is watching. Not only can Apple remove app’s from the App Store (I Am Rich was removed yesterday shortly after we posted our article), but it has now surfaced that Apple can also remotely disable applications from individual phones as well. Apple will only do this to malicious apps so that it can wipe them out from your phone before they cause too much trouble.

If Apple sticks to only wiping our Apps that are malicious then things may be okay, but this is one serious invasion of privacy in my opinion. We all know that the Feds are already listening to our phone conversation and reading our email, but you can now add your apps to the list as well.

Some Actually Purchased The $999 App

Remember the $999 i Am Rich app that was pulled from the App Store? Well looks like someone actually purchased it.

Someone took a screen cap of the review section of the App and someone clicked on Purchase as a joke not remembering that they had 1click purchase enabled in iTunes. I wonder if this was what caused Apple to pull the app off of the store.

Once again I wonder, how the hell did an app like this make it through Apple’s screening process. Isn’t all of the hoops you have to jump through made to prevent apps like this one?

Frogger For Your iPhone

We all remember the beloved game Frogger from our youth (some of us are older than others). I remember spending countless hours sitting on the living room floor as a kid playing this and pitfall on my old Atari. Now I can relive all of those moments (minus sitting on the floor) with Frogger for the iPhone.

The classic game is now available through the iTunes app store. It features updated graphics, updated music, and your choice of accelerometer controls or touchscreen (or both). Video of the action after the break.

Both control systems are active simultaneously by default, but either can be turned off in the game options. After spending time with all control methods, the swipe technique seems the most precise.

I Am Rich iPhone App Costs $1000

Alright, WTF, $1000 for an iPhone app? It must make you money right? Maybe get you laid? I know, it will bring you fame and fortune, that’s got to be it.

Nope, none of the above. It simply puts a rotating red gem on the screen, nothing more. The app, called I Am Rich, was developed by Armin Heinrich. I wonder if anyone has actually purchased it, then again, rich people will spend money on anything. Apple seems to have pulled it off the app store already, but one question comes to mind, how the hell did it make it there in the first place?

Apple has just released the 2.0.1 firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch. With it you can expect the much-awaited “Bug fixes” that I hope will fix some of the plaguing crashes that we all have been experiencing.

Weighing in at 242 mb I hope it contains a load of “Bug Fixes”. As soon as I get it installed I will pick it apart and let you all know.

IPhone-Dev Team Update

It looks like the iPhone dev team hasn’t been resting much since releasing the iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0 a few weeks ago. The team has decided to update their progress. Even with the iPhone 2.0 jailbroken, there still isn’t anyway to unlock a 3G iPhone. They have managed to do other things like downgrade a 3G to an older baseband firmware, which shows you that they have the ability to bypass security checks and run un-signed coded.

One of the nice things about the downgrade is that they have ben able to perfect the precautions they take to prevent bricking. On a side note, the RiP Dev team has been doing some great work on Installer 4 which will help everyone instal software on their iPhones/touches that isn’t from the AppStore.

After all of the rumours (what else is new) the 3G iPhone is finally here.

In a clear action of trying to play catch up to Google, Apple also announced a suite of software that will be revolutionary. (If they decided to roll it out in 2002). MobileMe is a much needed update to the .Mac system. MobileMe will let users log into a website using a billion dollar url; me.com, to access their email, address book, and calendar for a mere $99 a year, you know, much better than Google’s $0 a year charge.

On the plus side it will now be compatible with Windows, errr, oh yeah, Google’s bee there and done that too. Sounds like it should me meh.com and not me.com
