Steve Jobs Taking A Medical LOA

The almighty Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, is taking an unexpected Medial leave of absence from the company he co-founded. In an email sent out to all Apple employees today Jobs said …

Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

This isn’t the first time Jobs has taken a leave of absence due to his health, I just hope this is just a leave to get some rest and catch up on some reading. Tim Cook will head up the day-to-day operations and I’m sure Jobs will be in the loop of all the decisions and vision. Get well soon Steve.

DIY: Snail Mail Notifier

How did we ever live without push notifications? Email, SMS, IM; we get notified each time one of them is updated. What about our old analog world? Make Magazine show’s us just how we can get push notifications for an older form of mail, snail mail.

This awesome project uses an Arduino to trigger a prowl notification. The project can be adapted for any use like a garage door or door bell. A little electronic know-how is needed and if you want the prowl notifications to work you will need a PHP server. You can do away with the need for a server if you opt to have it send you an email or direct twitter message instead.

Exchange To Google Apps

Microsoft slaves rejoice, you can now migrate your entire company’s database of contact, emails and calendars from Microsoft Exchange to Google Apps. The tool, which is a small download from Google, works with both Exchange 2003 and 2007.

You do need to be a Google Apps Premier or Education Edition customer, but other than that it’s free and easy to use.

Microsoft’s set of web apps are just around the corner, I wonder if Google rushed this out the door in order to start putting a dent in the Microsoft corporate armour.

Google Voice Invites

With all of the hoopla surrounding Google Wave most people have forgotten about Google’s last hot product, Google Voice.

If you haven’t heard of Google Voice, let’s look at wikipedia ….

The service provisions a U.S. phone number, chosen by the user from available numbers in selected area codes, free of charge to each user account. Inbound calls to this number are forwarded to other phone numbers of the subscriber. Outbound calls may be placed to domestic and international destinations by dialing the Google Voice number or from a web-based application.[2] Inbound and domestic outbound calls (including calls to Canada, Alaska and Hawaii [3]) are free of charge, while international calls are billed according to a schedule posted on the Google Voice website.

It’s an awesome service and it currently in closed beta. Much like gmail of many years ago, you can only join Google Voice if you have an invite, and I just happen to have 3.

The first three people who post a comment will get an invite. Make sure you use your real email since that’s the only way to send out the invite. Enjoy.

Build A Real Working Tricorder, Sort Of

No self respecting trekkie would ever be caught dead without his or her tricorder. So if your that much a trekkie or have no friends and find that people of the opposite sex are repulsed by your presence, why not kill sometime and build yourself a real working tricorder?

The words “Real” and “Working” are someone deceiving. See, if you really want this thing to “Sort of work” then you’ll need to sacrifice an iPhone. Also, the term “Working” only refers to what the iPhone can do, like send email or surf the web. If you cool with giving up your iPhone to make it look like you have a working tricorder then go nuts, but might I suggest getting some fresh air or professional help from a doctor as well!

Project Eagle Claw: Taking Out The Scammers

Looks like the Nigerian government is actually doing something to stop email scammers that are giving their country a bad name. Project Eagle Claw is an effort to shut down Nigerian scammers. The project has netted 18 people and shut down 800 sites.

Previously the government would use “Cyber Raids” and petitions (WTF, how do you bust someone via petition?) to deal with scammers. Now they are going full out commando style and busting people left, right, and center. They say that when they are all done up to 5000 scam emails will be offline.

Someone in Hollywood should make a kick ass action movie depicting some elite commando group that’s sent in to Nigeria to take out these scammers.

Linux Distros That Don’t Suck

I, much like every other hardcore geek on the face of the earth, have multiple linux based distro iso’s laying around. Some of them are for testing and some of them contain tools that I use on a daily basis. I have had many people email me about the best distro out there. The only answer I have for them is “depends on what you want to do”. I have spent sometime working on a list of Linux distros and what they are good for.

Now, before I start. Discussion distro’s with people is like discussion religion. Everyone has one and everyone feels something different towards other people who aren’t of the same faith. I just want to remind everyone that this list is just what I see, and how I feel about each distro. It’s definitely not a “what’s right and what’s wrong” type of list. Enjoy.

Knoppix – The one that started it all. Knoppix was the first major LiveCD based distro to hot the scene and open up a whole new world of bootable operating systems. This is probably the best known and most complete LiveCD distro out there. It contains everything you need to act as a full production replacement system. Word Processing, graphics editors, media players, browers, mail clients. You name is, Knoppix has it.

SystemRescueCD – This one I keep with me all the time. SystemRescueCD is a massive collection of tools to help you get out of a bind. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It contains a lot of system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It is very easy to use. Plus, it can also be booted via a USB flash drive. A must for anyone’s collection.

Dynabolic – Billed as a complete media distro, dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives as a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, having automatically recognized most device and peripherals: audio, video, TV, network cards, firewire, usb and more; all using only free software!. Just boot off the CD and your ready to go.

BackTrack – The king of all penetration testing and security distros. If you’re worried about security or exploits then this is the one for you. With more than 300 different up-to-date tools which are logically structured according to the work flow of security professionals. This structure allows even newcomers to find the related tools to a certain task to be accomplished. New technologies and testing techniques are merged into BackTrack as soon as possible to keep it up-to-date.

NimbleX – This is one of my favorite all around LiveCD based distros. It’s full featured but a lot smaller than something like Knoppix. With everything you need to act as a Desktop replacement in a 200 MB CD image, what more can you ask for.

Gentoo – The hardcore Linux distro. What makes Gentoo unique compared to other distros is the need to manually compile every part of the OS. I know that their are gui installers now and pre built packages for the mindless, but having the ability to tweak and optimize every aspect of the OS will not only give you a stable system, but one hell of a quick one too. Mind you, all of this compilation could easily take you days before you have a base system, especially when you make Xorg and a windows manager like KDE or gnome.

Debian – My day to day OS. Debian is one of the oldest and most stable distros around. The core to a bunch of other distros like Knoppix and Ubuntu. If your looking for something that will give you no headaches and carries a very stable branch of applications, Debian is the distro for you.

Ubuntu – Ubuntu is Debian to the next level. It’s a fork of Debian that has quickly become the most popular Linux distro in the world. It’s easy to install, easy to use, and is probably the best Windows replacement OS that is Linux based. Ubuntu’s software repository contains applications that are more recent than say Debian, but the down side to that is the fine edge you walk on when it comes to stability.

Fedora – The big boy on the block, and by big boy I don’t mean popularity, I mean in size. Fedora comes chalked with what seems like every application ever made. Although to some this might be nothing more than bloat, to others it’s a full and complete experience. Install Fedora and you pretty much have every open source application that is useful at your finger tips. If you have never experienced Linux before this is a great distro to get your feet wet with.

I know there are other great distro’s like Slackware, DSL, and OpenSUSE, this list is just a collection of distro’s that I find useful or that I have had experience with. Feel free to add your recommendations in the comments.

Prevent Druken Emails With Mail Googles

Google Labs has introduced a new feature that might help you prevent that email you want to send when you really shouldn’t be typing. Mail Googles will ask you to preform some basic math questions before you can send an email. By default it is set for late nights and weekends, the time you are most likely to be inebriated (although you can tweak the settings if you are the type to drink all day) and send messages that you might regret when you sober up!

Is The Apple TV Being Replaced?

The Unofficial Apple Weblog is reporting on an email they received about the possibility of the Apple TV being replaced later this month. The email states that resellers should remove all Apple TV displays and destroy them (I hope it’s just the literature and not the Apple TV’s) by September 30th at 5 PM. The email also says that there will be a webcast kick off on the 30th.

Apple hasn’t been very happy with the performance of the Apple TV. I personally love the unit. My wife is watching the Sex and the City movie that she just bought from the iTunes store. Rock on Apple!

It will interesting to see what Apple might have up their sleeve. I hope it’s an Apple TV like device that also records TV and plays DVD’s. The perfect media center device. Only time will tell.

Portable Apps For Your Mac

For the longest time we have seen portable apps for Windows. You know; the kind of applications you can drag onto a USB stick and have them run directly from the stick and never, and I mean ever, have to install anything on any machine that you may run them on. Now with U3 technology (sorry kids, it’s only available for Windows) installing and creating portable apps has even become easier.

I did a segment on the Lab With Leo show earlier this year on just that, portable apps for your Mac.

Freesmug have an awesome list of great OS X apps like Word Processor, FTP clients, IRC clients, and more. They also have a few paid versions of portable Mac exclusive apps like Mail.app, Ical, and Addressbook so that you can keep all of your setting in synch.

theplaceforitall.com – This has two of the greatest portable apps that I use all of the time, versions of the popular web browser Firefox and the email client Thunderbird. Both of these are compiled for both the Mac and Windows, so it doesn’t matter what OS your on, you can run them both and you will maintain all your settings across both platforms.

Because of the complex way that some settings are stored in the Mac operating system it’s hard to come by or even create portable apps, but I’m sure it won’t be too long before that wall comes tumbling down.

OS X 10.5.5 Available Now

Apple today released the 10.5.5 update to their Leopard OS. The update contains a long list of fixes for the core OS as well as app fixes like iCal, Mail, MobileMe, and Time Machine. Here’s a list of what’s included:

General

Includes recent Apple security updates.
Addresses stability issues with video playback, processor core idling, and remote disc sharing for MacBook Air.
Addresses an issue in which some Macs could unexpectedly power on at the same time each day.
Resolves a stability issue in TextEdit that could be found when accessing the color palette.
Improves Spotlight indexing performance.
Fixes an issue in which contacts might not sync properly with PalmOS-based devices.
Improves iPhone sync reliability with iCal and Address Book.
Includes improvements to Active Directory.
Improves Speech Dictionary.
Fixes Kerberos authentication issues for Mac OS X 10.5 clients that connect to certain Samba servers, such as Mac OS X Server version 10.4.
Includes extensive graphics enhancements.

Address Book

Addresses stability issues that may occur when creating a Smart Group.
Resolves a printing issue with address cards containing information that spans more than one page.

Disk Utility and Directory Utility

Improves reliability when rebuilding a software mirror RAID volume in Disk Utility.
Improves reliability of server status displayed in Directory Utility.

iCal

Updates iCal to more accurately handle repeating events.
Improves performance when choosing meeting attendees.
Resolves an issue in which the “Refresh All” option may be dimmed (“grayed out”) in the contextual menu for certain calendars.

Fixes an issue in which an incorrect alert message could appear stating that a backup volume does not have enough free space.
Time Machine can now back up iPhone backups that are on your Mac, as well as other items in (~/Library/Application Support).

Change Can Be Good

Someone somewhere once said that change can be both scary and good, well we have undergone some small changes that have instilled both those feeling in us here at tech.nocr.at.

Syndication

Some of you might have already noticed the new syndication images off to the right sidebar.

Since I have received many emails asking if we have an RSS feed for the site, I thought I might as well layout the fact that we do prominently in the sidebar. For those of you heavy twitter addicts we also have an automatic tweet system that will notify you every time we have a new post on the site. Click on either of them to join the fun.

Comments

It’s hard to build a good community without an active user base, and there is no better way to build an active user base than through commenting. Every month we will be offering “dofollow” links to the sites of the top commentators on our home page. Please don’t just post for the sake of getting listed. This like “first post” or “up” don’t count. Be engaging and we will be rewarding.

Forums

I have been asked by many readers why I don’t setup a forum on the site so people can interact and ask questions about hardware hacking and the such. Forums are great and plentiful but we like to do things differently here at tech.nocr.at. Why not get a BBS going for interaction?

What’s a BBS you ask? Wikipedia defines a BBS as:

A Bulletin Board System, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to connect and login to the system using a terminal program. Originally BBSes were accessed only over a phone line using a modem, but by the early 1990s some BBSes allowed access via a Telnet or packet radio connection.

BBSes were where the entire hacker scene started in the early 80′s, and many years ago I too ran run (and still run it today). The Diskshop BBS still has some of the great hacker networks that started it all like zeronet and fidonet, plus we have some of them old time great BBS door games like LORD and Tradewars.

To access The Diskshop BBS you will need an ANSI telnet client. SynchTerm is one of the best and it works on Windows, OS X and Linux. Download it and install it. Once you have that done just telnet over to bbs.diskshop.ca and you will be on your way. For those of you who might be afraid to use an old school telnet interface you can always use the http interface at http://bbs.diskshop.ca

Pwnage 2.0.2 Jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.1

The iPhone dev team has just release a new version of their PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3Gs, first gen iPhones and iPod touches that are running the 2.0.1 firmware. Developers recommend upgrading via the original PwnageTool’s built-in update system. This won’t unlock your iPhone 3G, but it will allow you to put on unapproved apps like an NES emulator or give you the ability to ssh into your phone and copy over media or download voicemail messages. Lifehacker has a great step-by-step on jailbreaking your device with PwnageTool.

Apple Can Remotely Remove Apps

Big brother really is watching. Not only can Apple remove app’s from the App Store (I Am Rich was removed yesterday shortly after we posted our article), but it has now surfaced that Apple can also remotely disable applications from individual phones as well. Apple will only do this to malicious apps so that it can wipe them out from your phone before they cause too much trouble.

If Apple sticks to only wiping our Apps that are malicious then things may be okay, but this is one serious invasion of privacy in my opinion. We all know that the Feds are already listening to our phone conversation and reading our email, but you can now add your apps to the list as well.

Video Of The BlackBerry Bold UI

Doesn’t look that bad does it? I think that they could have polished up some of the small features like the browser and maybe HTML email but other than that it looks pretty cool. After all of the rumours (what else is new) the 3G iPhone is finally here.

Hits the shelves on July 11th (in Canada too!)
$199 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB

In a clear action of trying to play catch up to Google, Apple also announced a suite of software that will be revolutionary. (If they decided to roll it out in 2002). MobileMe is a much needed update to the .Mac system. MobileMe will let users log into a website using a billion dollar url; me.com, to access their email, address book, and calendar for a mere $99 a year, you know, much better than Google’s $0 a year charge.

On the plus side it will now be compatible with Windows, errr, oh yeah, Google’s bee there and done that too. Sounds like it should me meh.com and not me.com

Retrieve Any File Via Email

The Murphy Mac weblog explains how to retrieve any file on your Mac using a simple AppleScript with Mail.app. Once you get it setup you can send an email to your home machine with a keyword in the subject and the full path to the file you want and the script will automatically email the file to you.

I know there are other ways like Back To My Mac or iDisk, but using email is a bullet proof way to get the file anywhere you can get email, which is almost anywhere.

New Exciting Features For The Blackberry

RIM (you know that tiny company in Canada) announced some highly anticipated features today for their flagship product, the Blackberry. Many of these new features make it easier to work and collaborate with your coworkers.

Iâ€™m a heavy blackberry user so Iâ€™m excited to see all of these new features. Now if RIM would only make the screen bigger, give me a touch screen, synch with iTunes, and make the unit skinnier iâ€™d be happy. Either that or Apple should just get a Microsoft Exchange connector for the iPhone.

Hereâ€™s a quick wrap up of what to expect.

Download and edit Microsoft Office documents: BlackBerry users have been able to download and view Office documents, thanks to the Documents to Go suite, but soon BlackBerry users will be able to edit these attachments as well.
Free-busy calendar lookup: This will give you the heads up before you schedule a meeting to see whoâ€™s free.
HTML and Rich Text Email rendering: Rich text emails will now maintain their formatting on the smartphone, including bold, italic, tables, bullets, or whatever formatting your co-workers throw at you.
Integration with corporate IM and Presence applications: By utilizing Lotus Sametime and Microsoft Live Communications Server, you can use the “click to call” feature to engage with co-workers and IM Session “convert to call” automatically takes an IM conversation and makes it a voice one.

I too soon will get my share of the inheritance from the former Minister of Defense’s son from Nigeria. All I have to do is transcribe a Harry Potter book by hand then I will be rich! I don’t know a person in the world who hasn’t received a 419 scam email claiming to need your help in unlocking some money that is stored away, all they need is a black cheque from you to help out and you’ll be rich.

The guy over at 419 eater have put the scam on the scammer. They got a scammer to write out, by hand, all 239 pages of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. That has got to be the best scam the scammer routine I have ever seen.

For some people technology is a must, I bet most people could not remember what they did with their time before computers were around.

Parallels Server Beta Begins

This is going to give the Mac IT admins the largest collective wood since the release of the XServe. The virtulization company Parallels has announced that they have moved their server product into beta. This is the first virtulization solution to run on Apple hardware that will allow admins to run multiple versions of Leopard as well as Windows and Linux (who need those anyways?).

It’s still a closed beta at this time, but you can sign up and hope that you get that magic email to join the beta team. The guys at Parallels usually work quite fast so don’t be surprised if you see and open beta in the next few weeks.

So if your like me you want the one gadget in your pocket to do it all, phone, email, web surfing, text, your laundry, etc.. There are people out there that want a phone and only a phone, well Freedom Phone does just that.

It’s a pay as you go phone that you buy with minutes already included. The front of the unit has a keypad and volume controls. That’s right, no music icon, no mobile twitter, no nadda. Flip the phone around and you’ve got all of your necessary info like the phone number.

This is the perfect phone for my wife, no more support calls.

Hacker Conference: Before

So, you are getting ready for your first Hacker conference, you have no idea what to expect. Here is what I did, and I’ll tell you how it worked out: What I should have brought and what I shouldn’t have, etc.

I should precursor this by saying, this may be my first trip to Defcon, but this is by no means my first hacker con. I have gone to and assisted with ShmooCon two years running. So here is my list of DO’s and DON’Ts for the con you go to:

DO:

1. Bring at least one extra pair of clothes. You never know when you can be pushed into a pool unexpectedly.
2. Bring a laptop. Most people will recommend against it, but if you properly prepare your laptop, you’ll be glad you have one if you need it.
3. PREPARE you laptop.
a. Wipe it
b. Reload it with your choice of OS
c. Choose the SLOW formatting/partitioning options
d. Pick a different user name than you usually use
e. PICK A DIFFERENT PASSWORD THAN YOU USUALLY USE
4. Bring an extra charger or power supply for every electronic you have (USB cables that charge as well, will do)
5. Check out the weather patterns for the area the con is held. Dress accordingly, but remember, hotels have AC and heat.
6. Offer the free space in your hotel room up on boards, you’ll not only meet new people and interesting people. But be wary of thieves.
7. Carry a light bag. If you check to huge bags of luggage, make sure you stuff a small one in the fold, a small back pack will suffice.
8. Leave extra room in your bags. Hacker conferences are to hackers, what Disney Land is to little kids.
9. Bring a disposable camera. Yes it’s crappy quality, but if you loose it, or it’s stolen, meh, no big deal. Loosing a Canon EOS1D because you turned around for a split second sucks, even more so if it is a company camera.

DO NOT: (For each of these I have reitterated the fact that you should not do them. Just in case anyone gets confused)

1. DO NOT run up to “Hacker celebrities” and start acting like they know you. They are not from Hollywood and might not react kindly. Kevin Mitnick is used to it, run up to him all day.
2. DO NOT connect to Wireless of any kind around this cat (Render Man):
3. DO NOT expect to see everything you want to see. It is impossible and there is no right or wrong answer to what you should be doing.
4. DO NOT bring anything back from the conference that could get you stuck in Vegas. Lockpicking kits are one example of such items. Know the laws of where you are traveling from and to. Trust me, it is very hard to explain to whoever is paying for your travel (even if it is just your pocket book) why you have to pay an extra $200 just to adjust your flight because you had a nice little chat with the authorities.
5. DO NOT connect to ANYTHING personal. This means instant messengers of all types, your blog, personal email, your bank account.
6. DO NOT CONNECT TO WORK EMAIL. OWA IS OFF LIMITS

and lastly, DO NOT miss out on the night life. If you’re a geek/hacker, these are your people. And, if you can’t make it to Defcon, here are some other conferences that you can look into:

Social Messaging: Pownce v. Jaiku

I think I am finally grasping this whole concept of social messaging. I don’t know if being over 30 has made me un-cool or if, god forbid, I have become like my parents were when I was young, square and old fashioned but I has taken me a while to grasp the concept of social messaging services like Pownce, twitter, and jaiku.

I’ve had the opportunity to use both Jaiku and Pownce for quite a while now. I’m finding it hard to spend so much time between social networking and social messaging. Most of the time I create one profound statement and just post it to all of the “Social” sites that I use. This has taken me down the path of taking a real good look at which service I want to focus my energy on and use that service solely.

When you try to compare the features of the two services on paper you can clearly see a winner in Pownce. On that note, not everything you read is necessarily true. Jakiu offers an easy and quick medium to communicate with people and to have people communicate with you. A Simple and effective way to receive messages. Pownce on the other hands offers that and much more. Take the file transfers for example, a great and effective way of getting a small file specifically to a person or a bunch of people at a time. Lets not forget the event feature, want to plan a party? A great way to get the notice out. The downside to all of this is that it takes more time and effort to keep up with the on goings of all your friends. I know that there are other mediums like email, im, and upcoming to achieve all of this, but you can keep everything in one nice package and for a minimalist like myself, what more could you ask for.

If you want to keep your social messaging nice and simple Pownce isn’t for you. You should stick to services like Jaiku and Twitter. It will make your life a lot easier, but if you want to roll up all of these cool features into one nice service give Pownce a try. You just might be pleasantly surprised.

Google todo away with paid video

First we report that google is going to offer more storage on gmail for a cost an now google is doing away with their pay per video content. I guess it won’t be that big a deal if the content that people purchased was to remain payable, but this is a huge problem since any content that users might have paid for will be rendered useless on August 15th, 2007.

You might think who the hell would ever have paid for content on google video? Well I am one of these poor suckers. Some time ago i purchased some of the old Call for Help episodes that I was on. Users of purchased content received the following email:

Hello,
As a valued Google user, we’re contacting you with some important information about the videos you’ve purchased or rented from Google Video. In an effort to improve all Google services, we will no longer offer the ability to buy or rent videos for download from Google Video, ending the DTO/DTR (download-to-own/rent) program. This change will be effective August 15, 2007.
To fully account for the video purchases you made before July 18, 2007, we are providing you with a Google Checkout bonus for $2.00. Your bonus expires in 60 days, and you can use it at the stores listed here: http://www.google.com/checkout/signupwelcome.html. TokBox – Instant Video Chat

Toxbox is a free service that lets you talk with your friends over live video. It allows you to setup a video chat in seconds. I was able to get up and running in literally minutes. I was prompted to invite someone to the chat via email. They click the link and can participate even without registering. Controls are nice and simple – volume, mute, or kill the camera. You can even embed the windows on your own website.

This is a great way to have a video chat with someone if you’ve had problems getting iChat’s video to work behind a firewall, or if both parties are on different platforms. Great idea, great system. Thumbs up from my end.

Google to offer refunds to video customers

Last week we reported that Google was shutting down it‘s paid Goggle Video operation. Goggle preceded to send out emails to customers who purchased video’s from Google’s site explaining that they were getting out of the paid video game and offering a coupon that varied in value (depending on how many video’s you purchased) to use with Google checkout.

Google has now apologized for the way it shut down the paid video service and said that it will refund their credit cards and allow them to watch their videos for another 6 months.

“When your friends and well-intentioned acquaintances tell you that you’ve made a mistake, it’s good to listen. So we’d like to say thank you to everyone who wrote to let us know that we had made a mistake in the case of Google Video’s Download to Own/Rent Refund Policy vs. Common Sense,” the company wrote.

It’s now offering credit card refunds to “everyone who ever bought a video” from Google Video, and people who already received Google Checkout refunds will be able to keep them as well. It will also allow people who bought or rented videos to keep playing them for another six months.

“We won’t be offering the ability to buy additional videos, but what you’ve already downloaded will remain playable on your computer,” the company said.

Google opted for the Checkout refunds because the company thought it would entail fewer steps and offer “a better user experience,” it said. People who want the credit card refunds will need to fill out an online form to make sure Google has their current credit card details.

Media downloading made simple

Ever seen an online video you wanted to save for later? Something informative, or just plain hysterical? I have. I’ve tried the Firefox Plugin “Video Downloader“. It works, but you have to be using Firefox (Yes, there still are people in the world who don’t use it) and that doesn’t make it very portable. Then there is the fact that once downloaded it is in FLV format, which is playable only in a browser or Flash Player. I have also tried Zamzar, the convert “Anything to Anything” site. Another very useful tool, but you have to download the FLV, then upload it to them, and wait for them to convert it and email it to you.

Don’t get me wrong, these are great programs and very useful in their own right, but not the solution. That’s when I happened on a website called VConvert.net which downloads the flv, converts it, and delivers you the video in formats for your PC, MAC, iPod, PSP, iPhone, and even your Cell phone! (Phones capable of playing .3gp)

Rumours: Microsoft to take over RIM

Rumours are flying all over Wall St and Bay St at the purchase of global wireless email and data provider Research in Motion, the maker of the almighty Blackberry, by the massive Microsoft. Speculation even spilled over into the currency markets last night bumping the Canadian dollar up by three quarters of a percentage.

Could this be a signal by Microsoft that their effort to crack the wireless push email market has failed with Windows Mobile and now they just choose to buy, not only an established player in the game, but the largest player in the game.
I sure hope that if Microsoft does purchase RIM that they leave the cash cow as it. We all know how Microsoft can screw a good thing up.

When I roll out of bed the first thing I do is pick up my 8830 to check my day, email, and the website, hell I’ve even posted to tech.nocr.at from my little beauty. Please let there be a .mac update

Could it finally be? Has Apple finally listened to it legions of fanboys & fangirls and given us a much anticipated update to the great, yet featureless .mac service? If you’re like me and use this service heavily to sync your contacts, calendar, and email accounts across multiple Mac’s you’ve also been dying for this. When I logged into my .mac account earlier today i spotted a little note posted on the main page of the .mac service might give us some insight into tomorrow’s special Apple event.

“Due to scheduled maintenance, .Mac members might be intermittently unable to access some .Mac services from 10 AM to 12 PM PDT on 08/07/2007. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

I’m hoping we see some more functionality. Maybe some more space or the ability to use a much more robust webmail interface (with support for our own imap accounts, not just our .mac account.)

Looks like they might be tweaking the system just before Apple hits the stage tomorrow. Either that or they have sent all us bloggers into a tail spin.

Upgraded iMac’s with a flashier design
New Mac Minis with a smaller form factor and bigger Hard Drives.
