Sure you can go out and buy an automatic car door that opens when your cat gets near it, but that requires your cat to wear a special collar and you need to keep the batteries in the collar in check. Since most pet owners already have identification RFID chips injected into their cats, why not take advantage of them.

By using an Arduino and some inexpensive parts, Instructables user landmanr put together a cat door that reads the cat’s RFID tag within 4-inches and unlocks the door. The code can distinguish between different RFID tags and can act accordingly. It’s simple, effective and well built. All he is missing is an enclosure to protect the internals.

DIY: Lock Your Door Via Text Message

Billy Chasen thought that using keys to open his office was so 2000 so he decided to build a door lock/unlock system via text message.

Using a servo motor, a tiny web server, and some piping claps from Home Depot he built a unit that can lock or unlock a door via a text message. The system uses a white list of allowed users so people can’t randomly open his door.

As you can see from the video above, the unit works well. Some clean up and maybe a project box for the unit is in order, but it doesn’t take away from the unit’s functionality. If your not up to using SMS you could always consider the WiFi Door Opener or the Secret Knock Door Lock.

Sony Could Remotely Disable PS3s

Now that the PS3′s key have been leaked, its open territory for homebrew and hacking. Many people have been wondering what type of action Sony will be taking to combat this so called “piracy”. We have seen how ruthless they are with the PS3′s little brother the PSP and it’s no doubt that they will be just as ruthless with the PS3.

Digital Foundry claims that Sony can take some drastic measures including remotely disabling a jailbroken or hacked PS3. Even if you have never signed up for a PSN account, the PS3 communicates with the Sony mother-ship each time it’s turned on. The initial boot-up call back is used to upload error logs and download updates to the “What’s New” modules. It also sends a list of recently run apps.

Just that capability alone gives Sony a lot of power. Will they remotely disable systems? Who knows, but if they start to do that they open the door for some serious legal action. You know when the first PS3 that someone paid hundreds of dollars for gets killed and their unit is clean, Sony will be in a PR nightmare.

DIY: Snail Mail Notifier

How did we ever live without push notifications? Email, SMS, IM; we get notified each time one of them is updated. What about our old analog world? Make Magazine show’s us just how we can get push notifications for an older form of mail, snail mail.

This awesome project uses an Arduino to trigger a prowl notification. The project can be adapted for any use like a garage door or door bell. A little electronic know-how is needed and if you want the prowl notifications to work you will need a PHP server. You can do away with the need for a server if you opt to have it send you an email or direct twitter message instead.

Doorbell Control

Do you find that your doorbell system lacks that little bit of luster? Tired of it doing nothing more than ringing when pressed? Hardware hacker Nicholas Skinner felt the same way and decided to do something about it. By using the Synapse RD Engine which is easily scriptable by using Python he took his door bell to the next level. His doorbell now does all these cool things:

Sense Bell Press – Allowing for triggering of other events on press, such as additional remote ringers in other parts of the house, computer popup notification and possibly cameras / camera display (e.g. via scart triggering on TV) etc in the future.
Disable Bell Ringer – From either a remote physical switch or PC (for periods when we do not want to be disturbed by doorstep salesmen).
Ring Bell – Allowing the bell to keep ringing for a certain minimum duration even if the button is just pressed quickly to save missing callers who do not hold in the button for an adequate duration.

Magstripe Hacking

Is there anything an Arduino can’t do? Instructable user sketchk3tch built this Arduino Magstripe Emulator which can spoof a card reader into thinking a card has been swiped. I can’t even begin to list the possible uses for this tool. Can you say “Hollywood style hotel door hacking device”. Not that we are encouraging that type of behaviour, but it would be fun to write some code that would quickly cycle through all of the possibilities. Check out the video of it in action after the break.

Exchange To Google Apps

Microsoft slaves rejoice, you can now migrate your entire company’s database of contact, emails and calendars from Microsoft Exchange to Google Apps. The tool, which is a small download from Google, works with both Exchange 2003 and 2007.

You do need to be a Google Apps Premier or Education Edition customer, but other than that it’s free and easy to use.

Microsoft’s set of web apps are just around the corner, I wonder if Google rushed this out the door in order to start putting a dent in the Microsoft corporate armour.

WiFi Door Opener

We have seen our fair share of door opening hacks. Remember the secret knock door lock? That was pretty awesome, but what if I tell you that you can unlock your door from any wifi device?

The guys over at Sunlight Labs have done just that. By using a WRT54GL and some creative hacking that have wired up their wireless router to buzz open their front door.

So how does this all work? Well, let’s start with the router. It’s a Linksys WRT54GL, a still-Linux-friendly descendant of the WRT54G, the router which jump-started the custom firmware scene. There are a lot of custom router firmwares available — DD-WRT, Tomato, Gargoyle — and they can all make your consumer-grade router do some professional-grade things. For this project I used OpenWRT, the system on which many of those other projects are based. It’s got a much steeper learning curve than those other distros — you definitely need to be comfortable with the command line — but it lets you build a custom firmware with exactly the components you want. With some tweaking I was able to create a firmware that included a stripped-down version of Python, but which still fit into the WRT54GL’s meager 2MB flash memory. (Like the Arduino, Python turned out to be overkill, but at the time I expected to need it — and it’s always nice to have it handy.)

Solar Powered Cellphone

Ever been caught with a dead cellphone and no source of juice anywhere to power that puppy up? Come on now, you know you have. Well, Sharp is ready to settle that problem once and for all.

By dropping your conventional backlit LCD and using a passive matrix LCD screen the SH6230C will use a lot less power than a conventional phone. The passive matrix screen can display the time and SMS/e-mail all the while using an incredibly small amount of power. Don’t count on too many features either. Besides offering your standard dumb phone features the only extra bell you get is a 5-megapixel camera, but if you spend a lot of time outdoors this phone should never leave you high and ~~dry~~ dead.

The phone will run on GSM networks and is set to make it’s debut in China sometime this month with a $500 price tag.

Happy Birthday BBS

Just a few days ago, Feb 16 to be exact, in 1978 Ward Christensen and Randy Suess launched the first ever Bulletin Board System in Chicago.

Many people belive that the BBS was the predecesor to the modern internet, a crude form I will agree but a much more enjoyable form of social interaction online per say. If your not familiar with how a BBS works let me give you a crash course. Back in the day we use to have these devices connected to our computers called modems. They allowed us to connect phone lines to our systems so that we could call other computers and interact in a message based way. BBS’s offered the world of information; files, messaging and even games (called door games).

Many people think that the BBS is dead, they couldn’t be more wrong. BBS’s are still quite active and alive with thriving communities and best of all, no spam or trolls (alright, so there are still stupid people in this world, even on BBS’s). bbs-scene.org is a great place to find out more about BBS’s and how you can participate.

DIY: Cool Arduino Clock

People build all sorts of cool things with Arduino. Take the Twittering Doorbell or the Bedazzler but how about something as simple and useful as a clock? And an eye catching one at that!

The clock build requires a few simple materials; a laser printer, some LED’s and a few connectors. The instructions are super easy to understand and the only artistic skill you will need is knowing how to use a stencil (as you can see from the picture above).

Being an Arduino project, you will also get the source code from the project website to get you clock going. Along with the code you’ll also get a detailed PDF schematic and a template for the stencil. With the holiday season right around the corner, making a few of these and giving them to your geeky friends might just be the perfect gift idea.

Secret Knock Door Lock

Forget about all of those fancy RFID and Biometric door lock systems, build yourself a high-tech secret door knock lock.

By using an Arduino and a few other parts that were laying around, Steve Hoefer built a device that unlocks the door when it detects a certain knock pattern on the door. It works by listening and counting the time between knocks, and you can re-program the unit by simply holding down a button. Check out the video after the break of the Secret Knock Door Lock in action.

I wouldn’t depend on this to keep my place safe. It would be real easy for someone to hang out around the corner and listen to the knock and then they would know how to get in. The guys over at Hackszine have the right idea; incorporate a system where as you can use a series of one time knocks or incorporate a timestamp.

Ever wish you could open your front door the same way you open your car door? With a small key fob? This crafty (maybe even lazy) college student did just that.

We are talking some serious ass hardware hacking required to pull this off, but it’s one fun project to build, maybe not the nicest looking, but cool never-the-less. As you can see from the video it works well. I just wonder how safe this is. I use to have a car with a key fob that opened a neighbors garage. It was funny as hell. I’d lock my car and his door would open, i’d unlock it and his door would close.

Hunt Down Wi Fi Leeches With MoocherHunter

Last week we showed you how to screw with people who were stealing your Wi Fi signal by flipping their browsers and blurring their images. Today we show you how to hunt those Wi Fi moochers. The problem with leaving your Wi Fi unprotected is that malicious people can use it to download illegal files that can be tracked back to you. The best thing to do is lock down your Wi Fi to ensure that no one does something that you might be blamed for, but if you choose to leave it open and have a problem with a user or two taking advantage of it you can track them down and pay them a visit.

First thing you are gonna want to do is download MoocherHunter. MoocherHunter tracks the data that is being streamed from your unprotected Wi Fi right to their front door. The program is pretty straighforward to use and is part of a much larger wireless auditing toolkit called OSWA-Assistant which is chalked full of useful tools to make sure your Wi Fi is well protected.

Use this information wisely, don’t go out and do something stupid with it. Remember, this is to be used for personal research, not as an excuse to knock at someone’s door and start a fight.

VisualHub Discontinued

My beloved VisualHub, oh how I will miss you. That’s right, Tyler Loch (founder of Techspansion) has decided to close the door. Now I know there are a lot of tools on the Mac to help your compress or re-compress video, but none are as simple and powerful as VisualHub. For less than $25 you got Flash, DVD, mp4, divx, WMV and more, plus it is super easy to convert a video into a format that is friendly to the Mac family of products like the iPhone and AppleTV.

Tyler says that it was a difficult decision and is a personal one. He’s readjusting his priorities. He also has no current plans to move VisualHub into the open source world.

DIY: Add USB Ports To Your Alarm Clock

Every night I fall asleep listening to my iPod, and every morning I wake up with it dead as a door nail. This cleaver hack actually came to me via my wife. She said “You put USB ports in everything else, why not the alarm clock”. So I did. As you can see from an old episode of The Lab With Leo some time ago I demonstrated exactly how you go about adding some powered USB ports to your alarm clock to keep everything from your cell phone to iPod fully charged.

Here’s what your gonna need.

Alarm Clock with an internal power supply of 9–12V DC
PCB Mounted USB Port
+5V Fixed Voltage Regulator (7805)
Multimeter

First thing you want to do is open up your alarm clock and make sure that the internal power supply is giving out 9–12V DC using your multimeter.

Once we have satisfied those requirements, your going to want to find a suitable location to house the usb port, something that will not interfere with the internal componets of the alarm clock once you put it back together

With the USB port mounted you are going to want to wire the USB port and the 7805 as per the instructions that come with the voltage regulator. Make sure to leave enough slack with regards to wiring if you ever need to open the alarm clock back up again.

Voila, power to your usb device via your alarm clock.

Building your own RC helicopter sounds like a hard tasl, but thanks to Ben Hui it’s as simple as building a few parts and following a step-by-step set of instructions.

Flying RC helicopter is really very exhilarating. Their versatility gives a RC pilot a complete access to the three-dimensional space in such a way that no other machines can! I have played RC helicopter for more than one year but still find that I have just learnt a few tricks that it can perform. There are generally two micro-helicopters ( indoor ) in the RC market. I have already planned to buy one of them as they can fly inside the living room and even take off on ours hand. Unlike those operated by gas, these electric helicopters are very clean and give out no terrible noise at all. In one nightfall, I visited a web site, which is about how to make a hand made RC helicopter. I was totally impressed and started designing my own helicopter.

Syndication

Some of you might have already noticed the new syndication images off to the right sidebar.

Since I have received many emails asking if we have an RSS feed for the site, I thought I might as well layout the fact that we do prominently in the sidebar. For those of you heavy twitter addicts we also have an automatic tweet system that will notify you every time we have a new post on the site. Click on either of them to join the fun.

Comments

It’s hard to build a good community without an active user base, and there is no better way to build an active user base than through commenting. Every month we will be offering “dofollow” links to the sites of the top commentators on our home page. Please don’t just post for the sake of getting listed. This like “first post” or “up” don’t count. Be engaging and we will be rewarding.

Forums

I have been asked by many readers why I don’t setup a forum on the site so people can interact and ask questions about hardware hacking and the such. Forums are great and plentiful but we like to do things differently here at tech.nocr.at. Why not get a BBS going for interaction?

What’s a BBS you ask? Wikipedia defines a BBS as:

A Bulletin Board System, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to connect and login to the system using a terminal program. Originally BBSes were accessed only over a phone line using a modem, but by the early 1990s some BBSes allowed access via a Telnet or packet radio connection.

BBSes were where the entire hacker scene started in the early 80′s, and many years ago I too ran run (and still run it today). The Diskshop BBS still has some of the great hacker networks that started it all like zeronet and fidonet, plus we have some of them old time great BBS door games like LORD and Tradewars.

To access The Diskshop BBS you will need an ANSI telnet client. SynchTerm is one of the best and it works on Windows, OS X and Linux. Download it and install it. Once you have that done just telnet over to bbs.diskshop.ca and you will be on your way. For those of you who might be afraid to use an old school telnet interface you can always use the http interface at http://bbs.diskshop.ca

Charge Your Batteries While You Walk

Everyone has seen solar gadgets that provide juice to electronics or charge batteries up, but these units require you to be in a good source of sunlight for hours on end just to get a bit of juice. While some people might be outdoors most of the day, the majority of people aren’t in the woods for hours on end.

This little gadget put a spin on the idea of alternate energy. The M2E Power charges up a set of batteries by using kinetic energy. Strap this little unit to your belt while your walking or running and it will collect energy from your movements.

There still is no news on availability or pricing, but this is a great idea on harnessing some of that kinetic energy you produce every day.

A Doorbell That Twitters

As if twittering GPS units and twittering cars wasn’t enough you can now have a tweet go out when someone rings your doorbell too. This is a perfect project for those people who just insist on having a tweet go out about every aspect of their lives. It’s a fairly easy project to implement and can probably be adapted to almost anything. All you need is an Arduino board and, well, a doorbell.

How To Open Any Door With A Single Key

Bump keys have been around since the dawn of time, okay, maybe since the dawn of locksmithing. With a bump key any door is vulnerable.. or that is what the guy in the video says. You will be taught how to make a bump key that will help you open any door. The only condition is to have some skill and the key to fit in the lock.

I wonâ€™t comment on any moral issues that comes with the video. I will say, remember that using a bump key on a door that isnâ€™t yours is considered illegal.

You ever hit the door of a big conference with all of your gear only to be rejected as press because your index card press badge that you wrote with magic marker and stuck in your hand just wasn’t cutting it?

This very well might be the nail in the coffin for Blu-Ray, the Venturer HD DVD player will be selling for $199. The SHD7000 will play back HD DVDs at 1080i, Dolby TrueHD, and will have HDMI output.

Since this is the first Sub-$200 next-gen DVD player, this must just be what starts to break the market right open. With most consumers sitting back and waiting until the prices get at that sweet spot, this might be the next door crashed at Wal-Mart.

Red One: Out the door this Friday

The much-anticipated Red One video camera will begin to ship the initial 25 units this Friday. They cost a cool $17,000 each, but with an 11.4 megapixel sensor and the ability to capture up to 60 fps, double that of high end HD camcorders, $17,000 isn’t that bad a deal.

The modular based design works in its favor as well, enabling users to add different rigs, lenses, and other accessories according to your needs – allowing you to capture images in a lower quality. Currently, directors such as Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh are already using it.

Blackjack! The Samsung Blackjack is an awesome phone but when I tried to connect it to my computer on the road like I did with my old Razr, I hit a brick wall. So, what was wrong? After 45 minutes of hold time, you’d be surprised what I was told. Cingular “The new AT&T”, we’ll get into their name switching at a later date, told me that it would cost me an extra 70 dollars a month for their “Tethering” service. Tethering? You mean the thing I used to do for free? Well I am here to tell you how you can save $840 a year by using Internet Connection Sharing instead of the paid service.

Open up File Explorer (Start->Applications->File Explorer)
Press UP until you you get to root ( / )
Scroll down and select Windows
Now start scrolling, it’s alphabetical and you are looking for “Internet Sharing” (Use the down arrow, better on the joints, your joints)
Click on it and you are greeted by a simple application with only a couple options.
Select by pressing right or left Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) or USB. USB is easier and powers at the same time, Bluetooth is a bit more difficult but it’s one less wire you have to worry about loosing

Now, I am not going to go into how to set up each, you have been shown the door, it’s your job to get it working how you want it to. Also, if you don’t want to keep scrolling every time you want to use it, hook up to ActiveSync, explore over to it, create a shortcut and plop it in your Start Menu. Easy simple access on the go.

And I can’t leave this last tidbit out: It works in Linux!

I’m all about making sure that all of my gadgets get the juice they need, whether it be in my car, on a plane, or even on the beach, yes the beach. The guys at Talk2MyShirt have a great two-part piece on how to make your own solar-powered device charging bag. A great thing to have if you spend many hours out doors. Next I’m going to work on building a solar charger that will use the glow of my monitor to charge my cell phone.

Handbrake 0.9 Out The Door

One of my favorite video converting application for the Mac, Handbrake, has just been upgraded to 0.9.0. New in this version is a â€œre-envisionedâ€ interface for the Mac OS X and a completely rebuilt UI for Windows. Picture quality has also been improved quite a bit through some neat new effect; filters and deinterlacing techniques. Overall speed has also been bumped up, and you no longer have to customize encoding settings if you want to convert video for the iPhone, thanks to new presets that make you life easier.

In total nearly 300 changes were made for the new version, so head on over and give it a whirl.
