Here is a great project that will keep your cellphone going when you have no outlet to charge it with. Ben Heck from the Ben Heck show took a cheap wind-up flashlight, added a small diode, resister and a female USB port to make a hand-crank charger for devices that charge via USB.

I wouldn’t recommend using this to completely charge your phone as it would take hours of continuous cranking to get it there, but you can easily get enough juice for a call on a cell phone with just a few minutes of cranking. Its perfect for emergencies.

Speaking at the Chaos Computer Club on Tuesday, a pair of researchers demonstrated a method of eavesdropping on encrypted GSM calls and text messages by using a few cheap pay-as-you-go cellphones and a variety of open source software.

The ability to listen in on cellphone calls has been available to law enforcement agencies for a while, but even if the average person could they would have to invest in about $50,000 of hardware to do so, until now. The modern day phreaking takes advantage of security flaws in the GSM network and puts the power within the reach of almost any tech-savvy user.

By using custom firmware that they built in a few cheap Motorola cellphones, they created a bunch of cell phone "sniffers" that send real time raw cell network data back to a computer via a USB connection. By sending a target phone an SMS, they were able to determine what random network ID number belonged to the target.

All that was left was to decrypt the raw information they captured. This was easily accomplished with the use of a 2 GB rainbow table.

I’m sure with time, the software and firmware that was used in the demonstration will make it’s way into the average Joe’s hands and we will all be doomed. It’s not really modern day phreaking, back then all of us were just curious. There is no other use for this besides grabbing peoples personal communications.

Here’s an awesome idea. Let’s take some homemade Play-Doh, change the recipe around a bit and make it conductive. You could make all sorts of cool circuits, like say wrap some of it around a cell phone to act as an insulator and then try to bring it on a plane. As someone who once shut down a major airport with a home made battery powered usb charger I don’t recommend bringing the cell phone wrapped Play-Doh experiment on a plane.

Squish Circuits, as they are refereed to, were developed at the University of St. Thomas by undergrads Samuel Johnson and AnnMarie Thomas and essentially are nothing more than homemade Play-Doh recipes that make the Doh either conductive or insulate.

With a small battery pack and something else that can use that power like a small motor or an LED you could make tons of fun circuits.

Ever been caught with a dead cellphone and no source of juice anywhere to power that puppy up? Come on now, you know you have. Well, Sharp is ready to settle that problem once and for all.

By dropping your conventional backlit LCD and using a passive matrix LCD screen the SH6230C will use a lot less power than a conventional phone. The passive matrix screen can display the time and SMS/e-mail all the while using an incredibly small amount of power. Don’t count on too many features either. Besides offering your standard dumb phone features the only extra bell you get is a 5-megapixel camera, but if you spend a lot of time outdoors this phone should never leave you high and dry dead.

The phone will run on GSM networks and is set to make it’s debut in China sometime this month with a $500 price tag.

With all the hype surrounding the “maybe possibily” release of the Apple tablet, other possible tablet like devices have been over shadowed. Take this uber sexy looking Innovative Converged Device called the Vega.

The Vega will be offered in 7, 11 and 15-inch models and will all run Android 2.0 software. The largest of the bunch will have a 15.6-inch resistive screen that supports a resolution of 1366 x 768, come with a Tegra processor, 512MB DDR DRAM, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (no N), and Bluetooth 2.1. The built-in 512MB NAND Flash storage can be expanded via MicroSD cards. It’ll weigh about 45 ounces and have a battery life of around 4 hours.

Look for them to hit tier one cell phone carriers sometime in early 2010. No pricing is available on them yet, but the company does say that they intend to let them go for little cost, so it looks like the carriers might be subsidizing them.

With the massive amount of multi-function “smart” phones out there people tend to loose the focus of what cell phones actually are; phones.

My mother couldn’t care less if her phone plays mp3′s or if it’s got a twitter client. All she wants is a phone and a super easy one to boot. As she starts to approach her twilight years (still love you mom), this generic brand mobile phone with oversize butons with a screen that can be read from across the room might just be perfect for her.

The oginal idea was to design a phone for seniors who aren’t very tech savvy, but you can also use it if all you want is a really simple cell phone.

The 6380 Senior Mobile Phone does actually carry a few handy features, including a flashlight, a massive “SOS” button on the back the can auto dial a pre-set number and emit a loud warning tone (if you think pocket dialing people is bad, just imagine this in your pocket), a phone book, SMS messaging, a calendar, alarm clock and an FM radio. The display is kept to a bare minimum with a massive font and, ready for this, a whopping 128×60 screen resolution.

The 6380 only works in the 900/1800 GSM bands, so it will work everywhere except for North America (sorry mom). If it’ll work on your home network, expect to pay $74.99 for one.

This is gonna be one of the easiest hacks you’ll ever do, at least from an electrical standpoint.

Most electronics like digital camera and cell phones have a loop attached to them so that you can slip a lanyard on to it which in turn makes it easier to find or harder to lose. This guy came up with a similar idea, albeit a tad too extreme in my opinion, but still an excellent way to ensure that his remote control never gets lost. Actually, by looking at the picture, he is now ensuring that his remote control will never move again, period.

If your not a blacksmith or if you don’t happen to have a massive I-beam laying around, this hack will probably cost you a lot more than a replacement remote control would cost.

Yep, you heard me correctly, a nuclear battery. Researchers at the University of Missouri have created super tiny nuclear power sources that can be used as batteries. Dead gadgets and XBox 360 controllers will soon be a thing of the past.

The secret to these tiny power plants is the use of new liquid semiconductors instead of solid ones. Don’t think you can run out and pick a set up at Radio Shack just yet. The current focus is on powering nano electromechanical systems not your digital camera. Which in my opinion might be a good idea. We have all heard of cell phone and laptop batteries exploding, imagine if something goes wrong with one of these. You’ll have a lot more to worry about than burn wounds.

Most people who own gadgets that are USB powered have a billion different charging cables. A USB cable to use with your computer, a few wall warts to change your stuff at home or at the office, a car USB charger, hell, some of us even have battery powered altoid tins to charge our iPod’s and Cell Phone’s. What about the poor folk who ride their bikes everywhere they go? Do we have something for you.

Now you can build this not so easy and somewhat complicated device that will charge your gadgets as you pedal around town. Originally created by a group of guys using a grant from MIT. The device, which was originally planned to charge your mp3 player as you run ended up evolving into a bicycle based charger.

If you want to attempt this yourself, you’ll need about $275 and some advanced knowledge of electronics. Although this project isn’t for the faint of heart, if you ride a bike all the time you can charge everything you have on you. Plus, it’s super green and allows you to do your part to help mother nature.

Looks like we are being told to be afraid of hackers again, this time they are going after our cellphones.

Security experts at Georgia Tech are telling us that hackers could soon turn their attention toward creating botnets out of our cellphones. With more and more smartphones making their way into consumers hands and with every generation of phone becoming more powerful it’s a serious possibility.

These botnets could be used to send spam or other malicious attacks. A user could go out searching for ringtones for their phone only to download something with a nasty payload that could take your phone and turn it into a zombie. Now before people start panicking, this is all speculative at this point, but quite possible. Remember that most cell companies have yet to plug the hole in the bluetooth stack that leaves your phone vulnerable to a snarfing attack.

It’s a scary though to have millions of infected phones that are almost always on and just waiting for a command. I wonder what a DDOS attack vie edge or 3g would do.

In todays age of smart phones we all have an old cell phone laying around somewhere. Some of us might even have 3 or 4 laying around cluttering up their desks and work spaces like I do. So why not turn one of them old brick units into a functioning Skype phone, it’s not like you will use it for anything else.

JFDuval on Instructables lays out how to do just that. Now, you won’t get any wireless action out of this unit and some soldering skills are required, but from what the author says you should get some great sound quality out of the device.

3M just announced that their MPro110 tiny projector would hit the market in late September. This was awesome news for people who are on the road a lot and have to lug around projectors to do presentations. But did you know that Chinavision is already selling a tiny projector? Built into a cell phone no-less.

The Projector phone is a tri-bank unlocked GSM phone that come with all of the features you would expect in a smartphone. Touch screen, camera, bluetooth, microSD card slot, and a 640×480 projector that claims to project images up to 46″ in width. Check the video out and judge for yourself just how good the image is.

The phone isn’t small by any stretch, and comes with the worst “wanna-be” iPhone OS I have ever seen. You get a 1800mAh battery which should provide you with up to 3 hours of talk time and about 2 hours of projector use. For $370 you really can’t go wrong if your on the road and traveling light means something to you.

Every night I fall asleep listening to my iPod, and every morning I wake up with it dead as a door nail. This cleaver hack actually came to me via my wife. She said “You put USB ports in everything else, why not the alarm clock”. So I did. As you can see from an old episode of The Lab With Leo some time ago I demonstrated exactly how you go about adding some powered USB ports to your alarm clock to keep everything from your cell phone to iPod fully charged.

Here’s what your gonna need.

• Alarm Clock with an internal power supply of 9–12V DC
• PCB Mounted USB Port
• +5V Fixed Voltage Regulator (7805)
• Multimeter

First thing you want to do is open up your alarm clock and make sure that the internal power supply is giving out 9–12V DC using your multimeter.

Once we have satisfied those requirements, your going to want to find a suitable location to house the usb port, something that will not interfere with the internal componets of the alarm clock once you put it back together

With the USB port mounted you are going to want to wire the USB port and the 7805 as per the instructions that come with the voltage regulator. Make sure to leave enough slack with regards to wiring if you ever need to open the alarm clock back up again.

Voila, power to your usb device via your alarm clock.

Yummy Yum!. Nokia has just unveilled the N79 and N85 (pictured above). The N85 has a 2.6″ AMOLDED screen, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, is N-Gage compatable, 8GB of microSDHC storage, WiFi, and a battery that claims to go for 28 hours when listening to some tunes.

The N79 replaces the N78, similarly bumping the cam to the big five em-pees with a dual-LED flash, GPS, 4GB microSDHC storage, WiFi, swappable back covers, and a 24-hour music playback battery life.

These are all good and great but when will we actually see something that will knock off the iPhone?

We have all suffered it, bad call quality, poor reception, limited or no service. Fear no more (we hope that is), Cell Ranger to the rescue. Cell Ranger is a company that focuses on enhancing your wireless service (once again, we hope). The company just released two cell signal boosters called Cell Ranger Stix and Cell Ranger Port for computer and automobile users.

Both units feature a microprocessor that receives then analyzes cellular signals. It then selectively amplifies the wireless signal based on real time signals conditions to provide the best reception. It claims that this will offer users a more constant signal, fewer dropped calls, and faster data access, all this within a 6 foot radius to the unit.

The units are compatible with any wireless carrier in both the U.S. and Canada except for iDEN networks (sorry Nextel). The units will work with any car’s cigarette lighter or on any computer’s USB port.

Each unit will run for $150.

Nothing drives me more insane that people who wonder around in public places yapping on the cell phones at sound levels that could make you deaf. This little device will easily quite your immediate area from those idiots who think their phone conversations should be broadcasted to the whole world. Hold off Sony, we no longer need you to build a PSP with a built in cell phone, a crafty Chinese hacker has already done it for you. By removing the UMD drive (who really needs it if you have Dark Alex’s firmware installed anyway), he was able to cram his cell phone in the back of the unit.

I agree, not as sweet looking as an iPhone, but much better game play.

The PSP might just have some life in it. Although this is nothing more than a mock-up of what a PSP Phone might look like, the designer behind it just might have something. We have seen failed portable gaming unit with cell phone capabilities in the past, and most of them have failed. What if you have an established gaming system, like the PSP, and add a cell phone to it? Multiplayer gaming no matter where you are? I’d hate to see the bill for a long gaming session, but you can imagine the possibilities when you started to think about it.

Thanko has just release their new USB charger that will charge almost everything from cell phones right up to gaming consoles. It comes with a huge handful of adapters to charge almost any gadget. You can even charge the battery on your video or still camera by simply removing the battery and adjusting the terminals on the Thanko charger to match the battery.

It’s got all of the standard indicators to let you know when stuff has been fully charged. The Thanko USB charger can be picked up in Japan for about $18.

I am really surprised that a Star Trek communicator has yet to become the norm amongst the geek-elite.

Chip Chick has this “exclusive” communicator replica, unfortunately you can only have conversations with sound effects or pre-recoded phrases. If your really hardcore maybe you could cram a cell phone into it and show off your geek-cred.

I love coming across these ridiculous gadgets. Do people really spend insane amounts of money on gadgets this stupid? Todays insanely priced gadget is $1.2 million cellphone. The diamond encrusted cellphone has 120 carats worth of diamonds and no qwerty keyboard.

$1.2 could easily help out with an entire village in a third world country. People should be ashamed to even have something so outrageous on the market.

Mozilla has just revealed a first look into its new Mobile Firefox interface. The new mobile browser will come in two flavours: one for touch screen devices like the iPhone and most PDA’s, and one for non touch devices, like most cell phones.

Firefox mobile offers a familiar layout to all you iPhone and iPod touch users out there. Taking there cues from mobile Safari the main screen offers a similar layout. Back and forward navigation buttons, a bookmark button, and a retractable address bar.

There are some additions over Apple’s mobile browser: a zoom button and a tab button that offers a different experience of the Safari one. When you press the tab button it will display up to four tab previews on the same screen for easy switching.

Cell phone batteries generally fail on you when you need them most. You know, when your on the road traveling and can only charge your phone at night when you get back to your hotel room.

Wikihow has a great article on how to make your cell phone battery last longer. You can increase time between charges by turning the phone off at night when you go to bed, not using the vibrate function on your phone, and not searching for a signal when there obviously isn’t one to be found. You can prolong the life of your battery by fully charging a new battery before you use it, keeping the battery cool by not leaving your phone sit out in your purse in an overheated car, and by cleaning the battery contacts on both the battery and on the phone itself.

Most new batteries don’t suffer from the same pitfalls that their predecessors did like charging memory, or burn out when overcharged, but most of the tricks in the article can help you squeeze the most juice out of that battery.

Many a times I have cursed my cell phone and provider because of the ridiculously bad reception one can get. You know what I am referring to, you’re walking in the middle of the street (okay, maybe on a sidewalk) on a bright and sunny day with no massive steel structures anywhere to be seen yet you can only manage to get a single bar or service.

Imagine this, your walking down the street and you see Britney Spears doing some crazy and outrageous think (I know it’s hard to imagine Britney Spears doing anything stupid). Remember the Small Fry 1,000,000 Volt Mini Stun Gun we reported on a few weeks ago? Well, this one is just that one step better.

This cell phone in disguise is a high voltage stun gun delivering up to 900,000 volts of electricity to all the bad guys around (and yourself if you so choose). Have designers really come to the end of their creativity? I mean, we have seen Prada Cell Phones and diamond encrusted iPod‘s, now a external disk unit that actually contains gold?

Ora-Ito, designing brain child behind the LaCie golden disk which is a 500GB storage unit says that the silhouette of the device has been inspired by flowing golden liquid. I’m sure it will be a focal point, but I’d be scarred as hell if someone stole it!

I must say, this phone does look quite slick. The picture above is the new Motorola ROKR E8, it’s basically a thin bar shaped handset with a JAVA/Linux based interface. It is rumoured to have 2GB of integrated memory and a microSD memory card slot for expandability. With a 2-megapixel camera, touch sensitive keys, mini USB port and a standard 3.5 mm audio jack for music it’s set to be a slick unit.

Now the above might just be the one cell phone that will give the iPhone a run for it’s money. The E7 is expected to have a touch-screen TFT display with VGA resolution, a 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and xenon flash, GoForce 5500 graphics accelerator, GPS, Wi-Fi, and 2 GB of internal memory. Plus it’s only 14 mm thick. This might just be the perfect iPhone alternative.

Philips just announced the Power2Charge and Power2Go chargers as part of their Power4Life line. These are USB based chargers, including the big mama-jama SCM7880 (pictured), can hold up to 60 hours of juice for all your usb needs. Charge your cell phone, iPod, Blackberry, and anything that charges via USB. It also has an LED on the front that will let you know how much juice there is left, and it also comes with six connector tips to hook all of those other gadgets that don’t charge via USB. Have you ever wanted to shut those people up who ride on the bus or subway with you? You know, the people who decide that everyone around them should be annoyed by their conversations. Here’s an awesome project that let’s you build your very own personal cell phone jammer. This project is recommended for advance hobbyist only. There is quite a bit of tiny soldering involved.

An internal lithium-ion battery provides up to 2 hours of jamming (two bands, such as cell) or 4 hours (single band, such as cordless phone, GPS, WiFi, bluetooth, etc). The battery is rechargeable via a mini-USB connector or 4mm DC jack (a common size). Alternately, 3 AAA batteries may also be used.

Google plans on investing an insane $7-8 billion on the gPhone roll out. It’s also believed to be in talks with providers to offer other services including Instant Messaging and Search functions.

Hello all,

Here’s the latest on the sign-on problem. We’re on the road to recovery. Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day. An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know we’re not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday.

Finally, we’d like to dispel a couple of theories that we are still hearing. Neither Wednesday’s planned maintenance of our web-based payment services nor any form of attack was related to the current sign-on issues in any way.

There are a lot of industry professionals that often rely on Skype. Bloggers, Internet Radio stations, Podcasters, all of these people who rely on Skype (sometimes more so than their POTS line or Cell phone) are out of luck today. They woke up and were unable to sign on, unable to get to their list of clients, or interviewees. Some times we don’t realize just how quickly an internet service that drives our lives can disappear. If you weren’t able to to sign in to your favorite instant messenger would you still be able to contact everyone you had on that list? Maybe, maybe not.

I’m all about making sure that all of my gadgets get the juice they need, whether it be in my car, on a plane, or even on the beach, yes the beach. PongMechanic (video at the end) was built by a German guy and is a real life version of the old school pong game, except this bad boy has no TV and actually uses paddles and a whole bunch of moving mechanical components. This is the type of thing that would be awesome at parties. I don’t speak or read German, but you really don’t need to once you see this puppy in action, plus, there are subtitles!
