DIY: Mini MAME Cabinet

We have showed you in the past how you can build your own MAME arcade cabinet, but if you are lacking space for a monster arcade machine this mini MAME cabinet would be perfect for you.

Modder Ed had an old netbook lying around and decided to slap this together as a Christmas gift for some family members. Using an Asus eeepc 901, some Happ Controls buttons and a joystick, and an iPac 2 Player controller Ed drafted up some plans and started cutting.

The mini cab runs Maximus Arcade which an awesome front-end for multiple game emulators, not just MAME. It makes running a cab a snap; it installs on Windows and does everything for you including auto starting and hiding the Windows interface.

Check out the video of the mini MAME cabinet in action. I don’t have the space for a full size cab in my house with all the kids toys but I defiantly have space for this.

Cheap WiFi Radio

Looking for a cheap way to stream your tunes all around the house? Then look no further than this cheap DIY WiFi radio.

Video blogger Tinkernet shows us how to build one by using an Asus WL-520GU and a USB sound adapter, and best of all it will cost you less than $50. The video shows the steps involved in putting it all together using Windows. If you want to use a different OS then simply visit MightyOhm for detailed step by step instructions.

I always have my laptop connected to my stereo, now, when I build one of these I can just stream directly to my stereo. Best of all, I can control it from my iPhone!

Asus Keyboard PC

The long awaited modern day Commodore 64 look-a-like is delayed once again. The Asus Eee Keyboard PC is a self contained pc inside of a keyboard. Remember the old Commodore 64, 128 and Amiga 500? Well this is essentially that with modern day hardware and options.

One of the reasons Asus held back the release of the Eee Keyboard PC was to further develop it with 720p/1080p HD output. This cool gadget will turn out to be the perfect Home Theater PC. I only hope you can cram a pci card in there so you can add your own DVB-T or DVB-S video capture card.

With still no official announcement as to when you will be able to pick up your very own Eee Keyboard PC here at the very least is a taste of the unit in action.

EEE 4G External Antenna Mod

I love to use Back Track as my all around security testing OS (If your not sure what Back Track is check out my little write up about it the other day). I also love to use Back Track on my EEE pc. It’s small, light, and has decent wifi range. Thanks to Larry Pesce that will soon change. He modded his Asus EEE 4G Surf with an external RP-TNC antenna connector. This will definitely increase the range when your out scoping open wifi’s.

Asus N10 Pricing Confirmed

A couple weeks ago we talked about Asus’s next UMPC, the N10. While we reported that the price tag would probably be somewhere in the $500 to $600 range, well, we were wrong. The beautiful looking N10 is ready for pre-order for $850, not exactly in the budget notebook realm. I’m sure it’s an awesome machine that looks sleek and all, but at almost $1000 your might as well pony up a few more buck and get a MacBook or Thinkpad.

New Commodore Laptop, Yes I Said Commodore

With Asus having such great success with their UMPC the eeePC, why not have everyone jump into the game? Commodore (the machine that brings me such great memories of my hacking youth) seems to be jumping into the small laptop market. This tiny laptop was spotted at IFA. Not much is known yet about the machine, but I so want one. I’d put a C64 emulator on it and run around playing Summer Games or better yet, run my old Color64 BBS on it.

I think I just want to be spotted walking around with a laptop that bares the Commodore logo on it. Imagine the geek-cred you’d build with this in your backpack.

UPDATE

We have had some of the specs of the unit sent to us. They include:

10-inch screen
1.6GHz VIA C7-M processor
80GB hard drive
1GB of ram
built-in WiFi
optional Bluetooth

The specs are very similar to HP’s mininote and around the same price point of $600

Leaked Shots: Asus N10

The N10 is Asus’s next gen EEEPC. The N10 will feature the same Intel Atom N270 processor that the previous EEEPCs had so we can expect equal or better battery life and appears to be constructed out of high quality plastic with a glossy finish.

The biggest improvement is a gorgeous 10.2 inch display with a glossy coating on the screen instead of the anti-glare coating that most users complained about. Other improvements include a bigger hard drive, 320GB to be exact, and the addition of a thumb-print reader.

Speculation lead us to believe that this unit will hit store shelves with a price tag of somewhere between $500 and $640. I’ll be waiting….

EeePC Keyboard Backlight for $15

I’m a huge fan of my EeePC. So much so that I am actually writing this post on my 4G right now. The one thing that drives me bananas with the unit is the lack of a keyboard light, and when you are in a dark room trying to type, well you can just imagine.

Leopard On The EEEPC

I have written a lot about the Asus EEEPC. We even covered that crazy dude who put every possible hardware mod into the thing. Iâ€™ve had various flavours of Linux running, Windows, and yes ever Leopard (with a little hackintosh love).

When I decided to give Leopard a whirl on my tiny machine I followed Dan from Uneasy Silenceâ€™s guide on slapping Leopard on it. If you arenâ€™t a Mac lover he also has a guide on running Vista (although I can never figure out why you would want to) on your tiny device.

â€œSo, ever since I got the eeePC I’ve loved how easy it is to tinker with. Since I’m not a Linux guy, I dumped the Xandros preload and opted for Windows XP so I could you my EVDO USB datacard and blogging software easier, but I wondered could I install OSX on it? And, after trial and error – you can!â€

Worlds Smallest Bluetooth Adapter

This thing is tiny, I mean super small tiny. How tiny is it you ask? So tiny that when you plug it into a usb port it just looks like a cover for the port.

Android Hacked To Run On Actual Hardware

Some crafty hackers have successfully gotten Google’s java based Android software stack to run on actual hardware. The first hardware platform to run the Android stack seems to have been the Atmark-Techno’s Armadillo-500, which is a development board based on Freescales’ i.MX31L mobile applications processor.

Next, getting Anroid running on my ASUS EEEPC. How cool would that be.

WoW on the EEEPC

All of my co-workers can tell you about how much I love my Asus EEEPC. It’s the perfect little machine to carry around when you need to do some blogging and surfing. You can imagine how shocked I was to find out that I can also play WoW on it while I’m on the road (like that’s what I needed, more of a distraction).

The cool kiddies at the eeeusers.com forums have posted a thread with games that will run on the EEEPC. It’s actually quite a surprising list, not only can you get your WoW on but you can lay some smack down in Half Life and Quake. For a complete list of tested games head on over to their forums

EEE PC Goodies

I’m a huge fan of the ultra portable and ultra hackable Asus EEE PC. In a few upcoming Lab With Leo Laporte TV Episodes i’ll be showing off a few of those hacks, so I was extremely delighted to find out that some cool accessories have been announced for my new favorite machine.

The range will consist of a mouse, headset, travel adapter, and a choice of 2 battery extension packs. There are multiple colour choices for the mouse and headset, but it seems that the travel adapter and battery pack will only be available in white which really sucks since my EEE PC is black. I know you can get mice and earphones from any old place, but will they match your super cool EEE PC?

Prices and shipping haven’t been announced yet, but expect to see these on your store shelves in early 08.
