Got a dead 360 laying around that you can’t fix? Turn that sexy piece of hardware into a fully functional PC. The guys over at Hack N Mod have posted a detailed mod which converts a 360 console into a fully functional PC. Best of all, no red ring of death on this one. Check out the video after the break.

The main challenge with an Xbox to PC mod is fitting everything inside the cramped space of an Xbox 360. The CPU and the power supply have different sizes and line up differently. Innovation is the name of the game as electric0ant shows through careful planning and his project illustrations. Check out a few below. The complete step by step is given on his project page.

Now if only someone could cram a fully functional quad core into an altoids tin, that would be awesome.

Tiny BBQ Made Out Of An Altoids Tin

For those of you who know me you know that I am just fascinated by building things inside of an altoids tin, but this tiny BBQ dubbed the eBq takes the cake. This tiny little BBQ that you can use to cook up your breakfast sausage features:

Built in Striker
Removable Grill
Utensil Holder
Equipment Holder

Just remember to let it cool off before you put it back into your pocket or else you will feel a nasty burn in your pants.

Ybox2: Set Top Box In An Altoids Tin

The Ybox2 is the latest version of a programmable IP-connected set top box which fits entirely in an Altoids box.

The system can be programmed to display widget-like channels on your TV via a library of freely available software. The unit even has a built in IR sensor so you can change the widgets with a remote control.

The Ybox2 connects to your network via itâ€™s built in 10BaseT ethernet port and outputs video to your display using a composite connector. At the heart of it all is a programmable Propeller 32-bit multiprocessor, built in speaker, and a multicolour status LED.

You should be able to build the entire thing for about $50, which is half the cost of the original Ybox. You can find all the details, including schematics, parts list, and source code on deep darc

How To – Make Printed Circuit Boards

Printed circuit boards are rugged, inexpensive, and can be highly reliable. They require much more layout effort and higher initial cost than either wire-wrapped or point-to-point constructed circuits, but are much cheaper, faster, and consistent in high volume production. You can generally make a project a lot smaller by using a circuit board just like we did on Digital Underground when we built the Altoids USB Battery charger.

MAKE has an awesome write up on various methods of creating your own printer circuit board. Personally I have always been an etch man myself, but some of these other methods are quite interesting as well. Like using UV light and a milling machine.

DIY Toothbrush Timer

I’ve always had this fascination with Altoids tins. Combine that with good hygiene and you too can build your very own Altoids Toothbrush Timer. Okay, so it’s not a revolutionary hack, but it’s a great project if you want to get someone into electronic timing. Teach your son or daughter the joys of electronics while ensuring that they are maintaining good oral hygiene!

Altoids Robot

I’m still on my Altoids kick. I must have purchased 100′s of Altoids tins this past year and probably have 30 or 40 ziplock freezer bags full of Altoids mints (It’s such a shame to toss them out.

Here’s a great little project to do using an Altoids tin. An Altoids robot that will avoid obstacles on the ground. If you were ever thinking about getting into robotics then this is a perfect little starter project. You can put this puppy together in less than an hour and only spend $5-$10 doing so. Sweet.

Coolest Altoids Mod Ever

I’m a freak about modding Altoids cans (see here) but this altoids mod takes the cake. Greg Sanders has created a masterpiece. Using an old genesis controller and with TV out capabilities you can play the 1984 cult classic PC game “Rogue”. And to top it all off it runs off a single 9 V battery. It is highly unlikely to cause epileptic seizure because it has no flashy graphics.

Now if someone can only get Leisure suit Larry running on it I’ll go and build one for each installment of the series.
